craft challenge

consistent variable project I got an email recently about an online exhibit out of montreal called the consistent variable project. Basically, they get a bunch of artists and crafters, send them a kit with materials, and then create an online exhibit of the results. The first year’s exhibit can be seen here. The call is currently out for participants for this year’s competition, which is open to Canadians under the age of 25 (info here).

This is a cool idea, and and I found myself wishing that someone else would start something similar with a larger range of participants (I imagine the criteria for CVP are related to the project’s funding). But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that similar things do exist already, in all kinds of different places. There’s craft corner deathmatch, of course, where those with cable can watch a craft challenge of sorts on tv. There’s the macgyver challenge in ReadyMade magazine. Then there’s blogger themed challenges (minus the competition) like month of softies and tie one on. And there’s also a craft challenge over in the craftster community, which has had eight rounds so far, with really creative results.

Seems to me the craft challenge idea isn’t limited to the online community and would be a great party idea. Invite a bunch of friends over, provide each person with a grab bag of similar supplies and see what everyone comes up with at the end of the night.

CVP sounds like a fantastic project- thanks for enlightening me about the others, and a great idea for my next craft buddy gathering!

Thanks for the link. It’s amazing to see how the same materials become completely different things.

Hello fellow Canadian, thank you for posting that blurb about the terminus1525 project. After checking out the details, I’ve applied online. So you have already done a great service to me, and possibly to the gallery if they see something intriguing in my application.

Thank you for passing along that information!

Oh how I wish I was 25 and not 26. Looks like a cool project, though.

Hey folks. I just wanted to let you know that this isn’t the only Bias project to come about. We’ve done a few things, and are into doing a lot more. And not just on the net. And not just for under 25’s (you’re right, it is a funding issue). If you want to be the first to find out next time I’ve created a friendster profile, Bias Montreal. Or if you decide to launch your own project, let me know. :)

Love Joleen did something like this and posted it at http://www.whatsyourproject.com. She sent everyone a goody bag and told them to make a piece of art with it and then scan it and send it to her. There is a Flickr album of it – it’s amazing!
