Inquisitive Interviews

Well hello there! How fantastic is this? I’m so excited and feel honored to be asked to be part of this fabulous new site. I plan to do some interviews/profiles of amazing people that will inspire us all. If you think you know of anyone i should be interviewing then email me (nikkishellatgmaildotcom).

Today we have an interview with Kris of Strikker about her obsession with knitting socks!!

Strikker bedsocks

1. When did you first start knitting socks and why?

About six years ago i was ill and had to stay home resting for several weeks. Ii didn’t knit much at the time, but i got my mum to bring me some yarn and dpns and i started a pair of those simple spiral rib heel-less bedsocks, which really are just a tube with a toe. 1 3/4 socks later i was fit for fight again, so the last 1/4 sock got a good rest before it was finished maybe six months later.

2. What is your favourite technique?

That would be closing the toe using a three needle cast-off on the wrong side instead of grafting it. Iit’s super quick and super easy, and the “seam” is neat and impossible to notice when wearing.

3. Do you have a favourite yarn and where do you buy it from?

Actually i think i have knitted all my socks in different yarns from different sources, so i’m not particular. I love the handpainted ones (i recently got some from curious yarns that i’m itching to try out), but most of these are 100% wool, and for someone who wears handknitted socks all day, every day during the autumn and winter months i often prefer a wool/nylon blend for durability.

4. Do you have a preference for a particular needle type? DP’s, Circs, Addis, bamboo etc

Nah, i use them all. Ddepends on the yarn, the pattern, and the needle size.

5. Do you have a favourite pair of socks that you have knit?

My favourite pair is always the next pair!

Of the finished ones i really love my lace kneehighs. They took forever to knit, they don’t really stay up very well, they make my calves look like barrels, and as they are made in rowan yorkshire tweed 4ply they are not very durable, but they sure are beautiful.

6. Do you have any words of advice for readers wanting to knit socks?

A lot of people seem scared to try sock knitting. Don’t be! Really, it’s not hard - it just looks very impressive.

7. What’s in store for the future?

My next project is to grow a couple of extra sets of arms so i can knit more.

Ok, now i’m off to knit some socks.
Thanks Kris!
