vintage inspiration … ephemera
hello! as a quick introduction i am mav and i will be posting about once a month and talking about everything & anything inspiring in the realm of paper, pattern, graphic design and the like. Whip up is going to be a fun adventure for us all & i’m glad to be a part of it …
thanks to kath for organizing & thanks to you for reading!
this month i wanted to share a few vintage design online resources for inspiration.
first, you must bookmark this resource {if you have not already done so}.

simply fabulous vintage images on the Burpee site — you can find all of the old, and i do mean old, catalog covers & images.
and how about some mid-century illustrations?
the design of old cars and old ads might just give you the push toward an idea that you are looking for. i, for one, love to look at old wagons.

you can find these classic images on the site Plan59.
another fabulous resource can be found through old travel-related designs. the fonts & image combinations are very inspiring. if you are working on a cut-paper project or working on something that is Gocco printed this might be a great stop to check out layering and simplicity of design. these pieces were created in a time where everyone had to do paste-up {all work by hand} so the designs are simple & wonderful.

find this and more right here.
and lastly, some amazing eye candy … if you need ideas for sketching that you’re doing or painting or you just want to browse, there is a great resource of botanicals like this one …

… and more on the Royal Gardens Kew site.
that is it for now. i will see you in a few weeks and in the meantime, i look forward to seeing what you whip up!
be well creative friends,
mav

the Kew Gardens sketch is beautiful! it is a most inspiring wonderous place. when i was doing my degree I used to go there to paint watercolours of the giant waterlily leaves!

I also like the sketchbook drawings from the Kew Gardens site. I love exploring artist’s sketchbooks…so simple and unpolished yet full of beauty. I have been playing around with the idea of attempting some sketches myself despite my lack of drawing skills. Thanks for the lovely inspiration. Glad you’re contributing to Whip-Up!
