Last chance to catch this exhibition

Crafts council UK ‘knit 2 together‘ exhibition is a celebration of the art of knitting and how it is used in contemporary art practice. “It celebrates knitting as an end in itself, without the usual need or expectation to produce something with a practical function. When we think of knitting our mental picture generally is of a garment, a jumper, scarf or sock, but this exhibition subverts that expectation and broadens horizons.”

The exhibition includes “knitted interiors, intricately structured textiles, narrative hangings, knitting by chance and French-knitted flowers, Knit 2 Together illustrates the many faces of the art of looping fibres together.”

The exhibition can be caught until the 18 of Feb at the Oriel Davies Gallery, which is in Newtown, Powys in the beautiful Severn Valley area of the Welsh Borders. Entry is free.
If anyone has seen the exhibition I would love your thoughts.

I went to see Knit 2 Together with a friend and her young daughter in 2005 when it was on at the Craft Council and it was one of the best exhibitions I’d seen in a long time. We all had a hard time trying not to touch all the pieces. There was a rug by Donna Wilson that I just wanted to roll around in. The variety of colours, tectures and techniques was unexpected and inspiring.

Definately try and catch it if you can!

like lynn i too saw the exhibition at the Crafts Council last year and thought it was just wonderful. I remember Donna Wilson’s rug, and some beautiful little sweaters for birds, among many others. definitely worth seeing.

I somehow managed to subject some of my housemates to the two hour long journey from Cardiff to Newtown for the sole purpose of seeing this exhibition and it was worth it. The child in me particularly liked the knitted creatures by Donna Wilson. The exhibition as a whole was full of inspiration for me as both an artist and knitter and i’m determind to use knitting somehow in my printmaking projects though i’m not too sure exactly how. The gallery itself was nice too and had loverly food in its resturant. It was a great day out for poor students with the free admission and reasonable food prices :)
