Sew Dorky donut

I love wheat. I mean I love it. I used to bake bread from scratch at least once a week. I won four ribbons for my killer pie crust at our neighborhood block party. So when my doctor told me September 12, 2005 that I needed to stop eating gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains, say, for the rest of my life because it was causing major health problems, I was really sad.

But one day I ran across the Sew Dorky Donut website (makers of fine handstitched donuts since 2004),. It brought such a smile to my face. Somehow it helped in the grieving of giving up wheat. Not one to collect stuff, my husband was stunned when I told him how much I wanted one. So I was delighted months later on Christmas morning when I pulled this one out of my stocking. It even has the weight and density of a real donut. It’s so glamorous isn’t it? And I love the packaging. Somehow having it around makes it easier to forgo wheat. Now if they only made pizzas too…

that is a sweet little donut for sure! so cute. and just an fyi: Nutrilicious makes gluten-free donuts (and they are tasty!). i buy the vegan variety and thought i’d pass along the link. Nutrilicious donuts!

It’s funny how I’m obsessed with lil cupcakes and doughnuts when I cant eat regular ones. I have celiac disease too :) Annnnnd with a lil looking you can eat those yummy foods you once loved that taste almost as good…if you need recommendations for good gluten free food(b/c theirs lots and lots and lots of bad ones) just email me :)

Oh man.. you don’t need gluten to make a pizza!!
I know the pain..hehe we had to give it up for a while because of my son.. apparently it’s ‘not’ the problem so we are back on it but I’m not sure..

Ugh. Sorry about the gluten thing. I hope you can find alternatives that work for you. That donut is great!

Totally off topic, can you tell me about the fabric in your photos? I just used my small stash of it (http://disdressed.blogspot.com/2006/05/summer-2006-continued.html) and need to find more but can’t remember who makes it or where to get it.

Hey there, My sweetie and I can’t have wheat either. I got him a donut for his Christmas stocking too! How funny! I know lots of gluten alternatives that are yum! If you want just email me and we can trade recipes ;)

Leisl, It’s OUR fabric which is part of the Prism Minerals line. If you can’t get it at your local quilt shop, go to our website (funquilts.com) for ordering info. Glad you like it. It’s one of my favorites and looks great with the donut!

To me the most beautiful thing about a donut is the way it looks!! AND to see a crafted textile donut is even more wonderful. What a great gift and how romantic!

So COOL! I’m a celiac too. Donuts… sigh! But the thing I *REALLY* miss above all else? Flaky pie crust.

Still, better than killing all those poor little intestinal cilli – this donut is cute cute cute!

Another celiac here! I’m lucky that my husband and I are both GF by necessity – makes it easier when you don’t have to watch someone else eating all the things you can’t anymore. I think the way that you “make it better” is a very good idea! I do very much miss the sensation of sinking my teeth into a soft, warm Krispy Kreme, but hey, you get used to your donuts being a bit more on the “firm” side :) i also prefer the taste of the GF pizza bases we use (Canadian company, http://www.kinnikinnick.ca/ – they ship!).

For interest’s sake – spelt is a form of wheat, so it’s also a no-go. Most of the usual “natural” alternatives are part of the wheat-family, or are part of the Big 4 (wheat, rye, barley, oats) that celiacs have to avoid. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it!

I can`t eat gluten either, but really you can bake anything, just change the recipe`s
wheat to gluten-free flour. Easy!
