I had thought about taking out the center seam, and maybe adding more checkerboard using different fabric, but hadn't thought about adding another unseamed fabric. Thank you very much for the idea. I think it may be the easiest way to fix this thing. Letting the checkerboard be the accent rather than the main part of the thing would take attention away from it which would be a very good thing.
