From time to time we get reader submissions, asking us to link to a special project or website. This week, I will be featuring reader-submitted links. Send to whiptips at gmail.com to suggest a link!

“The American Red Cross has recently released a vintage line through its online store that we think your readers might be interested in. The
line includes a commemorative knit kit, which can be viewed and
purchased here https://www.redcrossstore.org/shopper/ProdList.aspx?LocationId=5 for $25, with a portion of sale
going to help the Red Cross. The kit includes the original WWII
Serviceman’s Socks knitting pattern, yarn and needles in a special
collector’s tin. The kit is meant to celebrate the work of the many
tireless knitters during WWII, whose skill made millions of socks and
other necessary items for soldiers and POWs.”

The site didn’t come up very good so I looked it up. If you go to this addy:

https://www.redcrossstore.org/shopper/ProdList.aspx?LocationId=5

You can see the kit on this page. It looks really cool!

i bought this kit not that long ago. the directions for the sock are very clearly written 60 years ago, and at some points were hard to understand. i chose this as my first-ever sock knit, so it was very hard for me.

however.

once i had someone explain what the pattern was saying, telling me the “2006″ words for what i was reading …

I LOVE THIS SOCK!

if you are an experienced sock knitter, get the kit. the tin itself is worth it!

I have this kit, just a fyi for those who actually want to knit the socks inside– the (red plastic around a metal rod inside, set of 4) needles are US 5 (3.75mm) and the yarn enclosed is very similar in thinness to Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock (not the same yarn, but quite similar; no nylon in the RC kit yarn and has less loft than the LL), which I use a US 0-1 with. The pattern calls for 7 sts/inch. I haven’t tried knitting the pattern but imo the needles aren’t appropriate for the yarn inside, imo… not sure you could get 7 sts/inch with the needles, but they just look like treetrunks against the yarn.

Still a neat kit, I’ll use the yarn & needles seperately.
