hi key mistress: the flaps are of course a great idea and are used alot in knitting needle rolls, they could be used in this situation too of course. I find thought that the pencils hold in fine if the tape is firm enough.

just a tip, it may be better to introduce "flaps" for the top and/or bottom so they don't fall out, like this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/keymistress/130255634/ which i made with a pattern from a japanese crochet book. hope that helps!

It does bunch it up a bit, that's why I think the tape would be a little nicer.

the pencils hold in fine with the tape - the trick is to pin the tape in place with the pencils as markers so you get it nice and snug without being too tight. the elastic sounds like a good idea too - does it bunch up the fabric though?

yes will do a better photo of the velcro - will have to wait till i get my camera back - in the meantime the end of the cotton woven tape has velcro on one side and the beginning of the tape (nearest the fabric) has the opposite bit of velcro on the opposite side - so when you roll it up - they meet up.

I made a pencil roll like this for my daughter a few months ago and I used two rows of 1/2" wide elastic instead of the twill tape to hold the pencils in place. It holds them in quite snuggly. Do you ever have problems with the pencils being too loose and falling out? I think the twill tape would feel nicer than elastic and I'd love to use it, if it holds the pencils in well.

Is there any chance you can provide a better photo on how you have done the velcro tie. Thanks for providing the tutorial, I'm definitely going to give this a go. It would make a great gift!!

i knew it - my instructions were too vague
sewing the rows when sewing down the cotton tape will quilt the three layers together - it does double duty.

when doing binding - you can make your own binding - or buy ready made binding - or you can use the cotton tape - no need to fold under as it wont fray. - its pretty strong too.

yes you may ask more questions if you need too

Thanks so much, Kath. You rock my casbah. I bought colored pencils on back to school sale last week in hopes of figuring this out. You've made it so much easier. Thank you for your generosity.
You make my world a better place.
Now-- when you say the whole thing was quilted, I get confused. I know that makes me sound dim, but what exactly does that mean in terms of doing all the above, and... then. Oh god, I do sound dim but I don't know how to go about quilting it. Is the sewing of the rows sufficient? I am planning on learning how to use the binding (never done that before either.
May I reserve the right for more questions?
