As a web designer, I have to chime in and say animated gifs on a site are usually bad news. The few exceptions, however, are when you make the animation minimal, or very infrequent. A recent animation I made features a customized smiley face that blinks, looks left, blinks again. To keep the animation from being distracting, I left about 10 seconds between noticeable movements in the gif, and then the movement was minimal. It made for a larger gif, yes, but not so much that it was huge. Animation can add subtle life if done right. Great tutorial, though!

Well, each to their own -- it's not the technique at fault but what people do with it. I like giving people a chance to try something their way.

Not sure you're doing your readers a favor here---a lot of website design folk think very little of the practice of putting animated doohickies on one's website, and I have to say I too detest them, because they're distracting and annoying.

If there was a way to have the animated gif cycle through once and then stop, it might be ok, but otherwise it just screams `amateur-i'm-begging-for-attention' to me.
