Stamps of Gee’s Bend Quilts

Weeks

Our quilting sisters in Gee’s Bend have had images of their quilts captured on US postage stamps. You can buy them on the US Postal Service website. This is poetic justice to me – women of color in one of the most economically depressed areas of our country get their craft on postage stamps. Best news I’ve heard all day.

Not poetic justice, if I may so very slightly disagree solely on a semantic level. Truly it is simply justice for these fine women to be so honored. Truly it is poetry in the act itself for the work to be presented on such an accessible level. Quilting is such a wonderfully accessible artform, everyone has *some* relation to it; likewise for stamps as a utilitarian object (and tiny piece of art) and desirable thing to collect.
What an excellent excuse to send actual snailmail!! I hope more collections like this will be offered. We have to celebrate ALL of our “marginalized” artisans: get them out of the margins and into the limelight!! This is where new artforms evolve!
