Christine writes in asking for a pattern:

Has anyone calculated this hat, worn by Meryl Streep in “Angels in America,” into a pattern? Something similar should be relatively easy, but I’d love to try a pattern if there’s one available. The hat is clearly identifiable as mass-produced by the tag seams in the front. I was so surprised how distracting that was.

i don´t know a pattern for this one, but if it´s sewn, it´s pretty simple.
just a top crown (a circle) and a very high side crown, based on your head circumfence should do.
maybe an adjusted butterick 3687 will do, if you don´t want to draft the pattern yourself.

this might also be very easy to crochet, beginning at the top, working in rounds as you would do for a pot holder until you have the desired measurement and then continue working in rounds, but without increasing stitches.

hope you´ll find a pattern that matches your needs :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I think that the hat is knitted – and even if it’s not, that’s my intention for my version. I think I have decided to get with the program and write a pattern for a similar version myself (duh!). It seems like a great opportunity to use up remainder stash!

I have made this hat several times: http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/hats.php

I think I used the easy flat top pattern.
