Dixie writes in asking for instructions for hand hemming silk.

I have lost instructions I had years ago for hand hemming silk scarves. It used only hand stitching and involved taking a few small stitches in a certain way then pulling gently on the thread to turn the hem into a roll. Can you help!!! I am so in need of this.

Well, this technique involves some machine stitching, but maybe it’ll help? I hope so…

Rolling and whipping fabric is a technique used extensively in French handsewing and Sarah Howard Stone has two [now very expensive b/c they're out of print] books on French handsewing.

I will hunt down the rolling and whipping pages from the books and try to provide a tutorial on my blog. It’s a very simple process once your hands get the muscle memory of scooting along the fabric edge, if that makes any sense.

In French handsewing, it’s used to finish edges of Swiss batiste fabric (or lawn) before attaching laces or tatting.
