Resist painting
A simple way to create beautiful artwork with children is to mix the unmixable – crayons or oil pastels and watercolor paints.

First have them create a drawing with the crayons or oil pastels on a card stock weight paper. Keep them thinking about lines – outlines or patterns with white paper showing through.
Anything goes! Then they can use the watercolor paints over the top of the work with the watercolor. The oily or waxy crayons resist the water paints and fill in the white places. This is great for making night scenes with black paint over colorful scenes such as fireworks, or large expanses of sky or water where little hands tire of loads of filling blue color in.
Endless possiblities and lots of fun.

What a great idea for doing something creative with little ones. This seems like something i can do easily with my 2 1/2 year old that he’ll really enjoy. He can get endlessly creative with the crayons and the paint and then he’ll oohh and ahh at the results; he always does when we finish a project. Thanks for the idea!

Like the previous commenters said, this is great for kids. I think it’s one of my all-time favorites from my first grade days. I loved doing this project and I can’t thank you enough for reminding me to pass it down.
