whiplash - accessories

OCTOBER is officially ACCESSORIES month - 1-16 OCTOBER

Accessories are: additional ornamentation or decorative pieces, they can help to highlight the good bits or hide the bad bits.
You can accessorise your outfit, your self or a household object.

So what to make - I have put together some ideas - I thought about giving you links to specifics but really there are way to many - so if anyone knows a good tutorial that might fit the theme - please leave a comment here for others to access.

Jewellery comes to mind straight away - this is one of the most common ways of jazzing yourself up. Earings, necklace, pendant, broach or bracelet. How about trying some alternative materials - such as felt balls, fabric scraps or knitted beads (like these at papastour), buttons, ceramic beads or pendants, how about using vintage wallpaper or fabric in your pendant - anyone know how to do this? (here are some at pixelgirl shop) or make a pendant out of recycled cutlery (like this spoon at craftster) (Some fabulous enamel pendants here) Or make a pendant from shrinky dinks. Rings - there are so many materials you could use - what about button/badge (I like these at 77 industries). Brooches are also a great way to snazz up an outfit - try making a felt or crochet flower, or a button and fabric concoction, or a small stuffed toy.

Personal accessories are not limited to jewellery. What about cuffs and headbands and belts.

Crochet collars are in at the moment (see this one at craftster), a copy of this one from anthropologie, theres a pattern for a crochet choker at the anti craft. I like these felt wool cuffs, and love all the fabric cuffs around. Here is a tutorial for them on craftster cut and keep has a tutorial for one that looks like a ruler (very crafty nerdy). Am also really into the vintage buttons and crochet combo in a wristband like this one on craftster.

Belts are a great accessorie, see this tutorial, love this cute one at fred flare, curious bird has a lovely obi inspired belt, these crochet afghan belts are very 70’s, love em. I quite like this toile sash belt at cut+paste
, or what about a corset belt.

Headbands are really coming back in a big way, and there are heaps of varieties, like crochet lacy ones, to bonnet style headbands, and reversable fabric headbands.

I really can’t believe that legwarmers have made a come back - but they have. Check out these unusual ones on this finland site and these fair isle ones on knitty and the postmodern ones too. You could also recycle old sweaters into let warmers or come up with something totally new.

You may have noticed though, that in the comp, you can also accessorise your house. By this I mean jazz up an old piece of furniture or snazz up your tea set. How about a new lampshade or a tea cozy. What about some baskets and bowls to use on your sideboard, or some new pillows or throws for your couch. What about a new rag rug for your bathroom, or a table runner for the dinne table. The ideas are endless….

Here’s a tutorial on the knitted beads. I LOVE the one on papastour, but this is similar. http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer06/PATTjulie.html
