You must go to Little Cotton Rabbits!
Julie has the most divine little knitted stockings with a free pattern! I wish I could knit!
The url is http://littlecottonrabbits.typepad.co.uk/my_weblog/

I hope this helps!

Seri, McCall’s has a free pattern download here:

I’m not crazy about their fabric/decorating choices, but the shape is good. I used their pattern and did a different design with a fleece lining (there’s a pic on my blog–scroll down a little–www.howaboutorange.blogspot.com).

Good luck, whatever you end up doing!

I finally found a cool pattern that wasn’t cheesy or looked like my 90 year old Grandma made. Here’s my version, and it includes a link to original pattern:

unless you have very little else to do for the next week (!) this might be rather too much work, but maybe for next year. i chose a wintery sock pattern and just sized it up with worsted yarn and large needles – mine turned out 25 inches long. it doesn’t make a traditional stocking shape and i didn’t choose traditional colours but i’m in love with it all the same :)
