un-branding

The ever inspirational Keri Smith of wish jar journal, author, guerrilla artist and incredibly creative person, whose thoughts on ad-free blogs are well known, has a theme going on her blog at the moment of un-branding. She has some terrific ways of covering up all those commercial brands on household products and will be producing down-loadable templates and designs of ’skins’ for cereal boxes and toothpaste for anyone to use. In the meantime while you wait for Keri’s designs you can do your own. I would love to see if anyone does try this.

The labels are cute, but I find it interesting that brands are bad but consuming paper is not. I see brands and overconsumption going hand-in-hand and am troubled by getting rid of one without the other. If one must label one’s own products, why not label reusable containers with materials that can handle being washed and transfer products from the branded packages into your own reusable packaging.

I like it! I remember as a kid playing with all sorts of everyday items…forks, bottles, coins etc…those bottles do bring back memories!!

I checked out her blog, and it’s not about “branding being bad”, it’s about the impact some packaging can have on your surroundings/mindset. (at least that’s what I got from it)

I loved the cereal box covered in plants, it looked very peaceful sitting on the table!

Oh I love it! I think next time my husband goes out of town I am going to furiously go through our cabinets and “un-brand” everything with new packaging, just to freak him out a bit.
