This is a very true point about light damage - something I should know having trained to be a textile curator! My thread doesn't hang around long enough to get light damaged so personally I wont worry too much.

My husband made me a nifty thread holder like this one. It's much smaller though, it probably holds only 12 spools and I go through them pretty quickly. Oh, and instead of nails, he used pegs. He also added a row of pegs at the bottom for all my scissors and what not.

Right on! I have so much thread that it would get dusty if stored on an open rack. Thread should last 40 years if stored in a closed container away from sunlight so I keep the large cones in a file cabinet and the spools in a parts type organizer with plastic drawers. The silk thread is another matter, stored in a box with a tight lid, completely in the dark. Ok, that could be said about me as well!!

While I agree that threads look so pretty and it's really handy to have them out on a rack like this - you need to be aware that threads WILL DETERIORATE when stored this way!

Sunlight and dry air both weaken threads, especially those very pretty rayon embroidery threads - so beware. Thread isn't cheap, so I would advise anyone with a serious amount of threads to think twice before they mount their threads this way....
Cheers,
Caity
