Banner Design Competition: Which banner best reflects WhipUp’s content?

Thank you to everyone for entering, sorry if your entry did not make it to the final eight. It was a tough decision, there were lots of great entries. And now I want to see which one YOU the readers like best, to that end I will be running three polls to see which banner is going to be the new WhipUp Banner.

You will need to go the banner competition page to view the eight finalists.

The first poll is content – please ensure that when voting you are thinking about content and not style or inspiration or ideas.

  1. Tammy Says:

I thought about voting for number 6 — but didn’t — because it reminds me of many other craft sites…

    Not unique enough maybe?

  2. E Says:

Just to let you know how much I love and appreciate your website. Keep up the great job of bringing so many creative ideas to us and bringing a spot of happiness with craft.

  3. Mimi K Says:

I am surprised that most designs are focused on fiber arts- I guess that is what you post about mostly, but I thought there was an attempt to branch out with jewelry and ceramics? A banner with a specific focus might limit the audience?

  4. HByrge Says:

    #8

  5. Heather Layne Says:

Like the weaving in the current banner is limiting the audience, Mimi? The content of Whipup is very broad, encompassing every craft I can think of, and many I can’t! I do agree that it would be nice to include as many different types of expression as possible in the new banner (which is why I voted for #4), but I don’t think that people will stop reading Whipup because there are knitting needles in the banner and they make jewelry, nor will it cease to draw new readers from all areas of handcrafting. All the banners are very lovely, but the wonderful thing is that we, the readers, ultimately get to choose the new banner! Vote vote vote!

Just wanted to write in and say that the poll is a little confusing. I couldn’t tell if the banners’ number labels were above or below each banner. It seemed like the label should be above the banner, but when I scrolled back to the top to check, I realized all the labels were below the banners. So I ended up voting for the wrong banner.

Hopefully it was just me being ditzy, and it’s not a common problem – otherwise your poll results will be very wrong.

After I voted I was very surprised to see the results… so I’m wondering if the numbering was confusing (when you get to the middle of the list, it seems like it’s the number ABOVE the banner, not below it). Right now the zipper banner (#6) has the most votes. Maybe it’s just me but I thought that was the least appropriate or relevant banner. All in all, I think all of them are great banners, and very well designed. I chose #7 because it was the most visually attractive one — nice and simple.

I understand that this is being viewed on a computer and the image has to be digital. Still, I am surprised at how few of these options appear to have been handcrafted themselves in any way. To me, they do not—on the whole—symbolize handcraft or any hint at the world being hectic, where time might be an issue. They appear very technically and digitally rendered with a lot of planning. Most lack an element of spontaneous creativity.

I feel it is more important for the banner to convey the “spirit” of the site than to attempt to hold all the possible areas the site may cover. For this reason, I had to vote for #1.

    Just my two cents. Thanks!

  9. Tyler Says:

Well, I belatedly realize I was supposed to be paying strict attention to CONTENT in this first poll, so perhaps I jumped the gun with a portion of my first comment. I still feel most of what I wrote applies to the content of the various banners as well, and I still vote for #1.

Thanks; I appreciate your involvement of the viewers in this process.

  10. Paula Says:

I like the banner you already use. Nothing says comfort in a hectic world like a handmade blanket.

  11. Natch Says:

hm, I love the photo in number 3, but not the font.

    it’s such a hard decision! ;)

  12. Holly Says:

I like the current banner also.

But I voted for number 4 because it conveys various crafts, to me.

  13. Alex aka Gypsy Girl Says:

Banner # 4 conveys crafty ideas and also passes the dreamy artsy feeling I love about the process of creating something handmade!

  14. Angela Says:

I actually like the current banner. I thought the entries were good but I’m not sure I would change anything.

  15. Michelle Says:

Oh, this was such a difficult decision – they all reflect very well the content of this site! I think whichever one gets up as the winner, it will be a good choice. I don’t envy the decisions made to get to the final eight!

  16. earthchick Says:

I voted for #2 but my favorite is actually the current one.

  17. stephanie s Says:

i also voted for number one, because i think it best contained what i think the site to be about. that said, if the motivation to change the banner was to have one more reflective of the content of your site i don’t think any of the options are better than what you already have nor do they embody the spirit of your site. i think that change for the sake of change isn’t necessary if there isn’t improvement or progress. although a blog is a living, breathing entity i do feel there should be a consistent look and feel to a site such as this, a branding of sorts, and that is very hard to accomplish in this way. back to the drawing board?…

  18. ruthie Says:

I voted for #4 but my fave is the current one too.

  19. Clara Says:

Number 4, because I feel like whip up gives little peeks into all kinds of different craft arenas.

  20. emilydimovgottshall Says:

I voted number 4 too. Thought it was the most interesting because it showed the most…but I like variety. :)

  21. emilydimovgottshall Says:

Regarding Mimi/Heather…I think what Mimi was saying is the contest banner was supposed to encompass various aspects of craft arts not limited to one type/style. I’d check this but the rules have either been removed or I just can’t find them.

Of course, the original banner is exempt from this…
