Design a banner competition: Which banner best reflects WhipUp’s STYLE

Thank you to everyone for entering, sorry if your entry did not make it to the final eight. It was a tough decision, there were lots of great entries. And now I want to see which one YOU the readers like best, to that end I will be running three polls to see which banner is going to be the new WhipUp Banner.

The first poll was close and some people were confused about which banner they had voted for - please make sure you check before voting.

You will need to go the banner competition page to view the eight finalists.

The second poll is STYLE - please ensure that when voting you are thinking about WhipUp’s particular clean and simple style.

Um… people were confused about which banner they were voting for because your labels are equidistant between the banner above and banner below the label. It’s very unclear which banner the label is referring to.

    i.e., your usability sucks.

Make the label CLOSER to the image it relates to and FARTHER AWAY from the banner it doesn’t. Or add horizontal lines as dividers. Either thing would help.

I think it’s interesting that you offer the EXACT SAME layout instead of trying to figure out why people were confused. You just assume people are stupid.

    Interesting.

YEeah, yeah! i agree. i meant to vote for #6! so take one away from 5, and put it to 6 for me!

  3. Sally Says:

It’s a good point - I’ve voted for the wrong one this time despite knowing which label went with which banner. Can’t change my vote (from 2 to 3) but it doesn’t look like it’s going to make a difference at the moment.

  4. Melanie Says:

I have to agree, it wouldn’t be terribly difficult to adjust the layout of the banners and their captions a little bit. Personally I think the labels should be above the banner they refer to, but changing that now will possibly just confuse voters further!

I have to say WOW! I am sort of shocked by the level of vitriol and angst over this. I have have - hopefully fixed the problem now. Is it any clearer?

  6. Kathy Says:

Yes…Quite! I’m also relieved to find that my least favorite is no longer winning..lol.

I can only view design #1, did it win?

Brenda, what is up with the pissy tone of telling the fabulous folks who put this together —for our free viewing pleasure— that something is not distinctly visible with what it’s number is??
Would the world end if you brought it to their attention assuming the horrible misdeed was not intentional & that they were not aware of the problem?
….oooh that’s right, must be the squeaky/rude wheel gets the attention theory.

  8. ygg Says:

I liked #2 best, but I don’t know what that thing with the rings is behind the first tag and it looks like a bone or ivory version of brass knuckles, so I had to go with #7.

and FWIW, I had no trouble figuring out which banner I was voting for in either poll. Maybe it’s because I’m a graphic designer ;)

  9. Irene Says:

There is absolutely no reason for this vote. Number 3 is a clear winner! ;-)

  10. laniej Says:

This was a really tough decision. All of these banners are great and creative! Kudos to the designers!

  11. Angie Says:

I disagree with Lanaiej and am disappointed with the options. Where is choice number 9 - none of the above? I am saddened that this was the best to choose from. Just my opinion, had to share.

  12. Claralea Says:

No offense to #1’s designer, but how is that one winning??? The black background reads as heavy and unfriendly to me, whereas #3 is minimal but visually engaging–just like whip-up! :)
