I was in Michael's (chain of craft stores in the USA) yesterday and saw that Martha Stewart has a line of craft materials out. One of the items was paper beads just like this. Note -- not the cut paper to make the beads out of, but a baggie full of already-made beads along with nylon line to string them on!

When I was growing up we used to make beads like that out of the Sunday Comic strips in the newspaper. Great fun on a rainy day. Of course, yours are much more attractive!
