Listography
Listography Journal: Your Life in Lists by Lisa Nola (Author), Nathaniel Russell (Illustrator), published by Chronicle Books.
Not just a book but a website too - where you can organise and create your lists for anything and everything you can possibly imagine. You can also search other peoples lists - such as music and books, things to do, quotes and lots lots more. Great for the voyeur in us all or great way to discover new ideas.
The book is an illustrated journal - great subtle water colour illustrations and design features like the rounded corners and heavy paper make it a pleasure to use. List all your favourite things - add to it over time or do it all at once and use it as a marker of where you are at right now.

Chronicle are kindly giving away 5 copies of this book. Winners will be chosen by Chronicle - please leave a comment with a list of your top 5 guilty pleasures. Comments will be closed on Friday and winners chosen, published and contacted the following week.

Ooh guilty pleasures. I don’t get to indulge as often as I like (thanks to a small toddler) but here goes in no particular order:
Apple martinis; long hot baths with lavendar bath salts and sipping on an apple martini; buying the latest craft books and reading them with an apple martini (are you sensing a theme here?); sleeping in the middle of my bed all by myself; and writing in a brand new journal.

1. Singing out loud to Duran Duran songs while driving on the highway
2. Eating pickles straight from the jar. Not bothering to get a fork, but just fishing them out with my fingers
3. cracking my knuckles. the sound is so satisfying!
4. punching my mechanical pencil through lined paper. I can get pretty obsessive about filling a sheet with that pattern
5. leaving just a few drops in the milk bag in the fridge without changing it/leaving one ice cube in the tray in the freezer. It’s sweet revenge for when someone else does it to me, but then again, it’s a vicious cycle!
August 28th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

Here are my five guiltiest pleasures!
1. Singing along to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode soundtrack, fastforwarding to the good parts and then rewinding to hear them again
2. Taking naps in the morning, when I haven’t quite earned a rest yet . . . so delicious
3. Taking a cab home from a nice night out, when I could take the subway instead
4. Checking the mailbox about 5 times a day — even after I’ve picked up the mail that day — just in case someone delivered a present in my mailbox for no reason
5. Purchasing decorative objects with no function that will barely fit in my apartment. My favorite objects to purchase: small vinyl figurines of strange creatures

Cookies (or cake) for breakfast.
Listening to really bad music, or really bad talk radio, by myself in the car.
Reading the occasional issue of Glamour/Cosmo/RedBook.
Playing mindless mini-games on the internets.
My daily comic reads: Mary Worth & For Better or For Worse

this day: slow morning at a coastal town, early to get a huge decaf americano, visual journaling & people watching; then a walk along the ocean with my digital camera
thrift store and garage sale searching
this day: a basket to fill as i browse powell’s books; taking the filled to overflowing basket to the cafe in the store, buying a scone and a decaf latte and pouring through the books to pick out a maximum of $100 worth.
buying fabulous paper and pens
spontaneous favorite people gatherings. sitting out on our deck, nibbles in the center of the table, beverages of choice on hand, candles and lighting from our fig tree overhead. catching up, telling stories that make us laugh and cry and just breathing in all the love.
August 30th, 2007 at 1:44 am
dark chocolate
hitting snooze way too many times which leads to oversleeping virtually on purpose
ice cream
coffee (well, caffeine - but maybe this one is more like an addiction)
scraping off some of the nail polish (preferably brightly coloured so that the ugly rests of it really shows)
August 30th, 2007 at 2:13 am
1 keeping tv’s sound down to hearing limit
2 buying something expensive and unhealthy to eat on a hard day’s night
3 need for a scapegoat
4 chocolate
5 making lists
August 30th, 2007 at 2:58 am
–browsing through the remnant bin at the fabric store
–re-reading my favorite Jane Austen novels, and snickering loudly at the wickedly sarcastic bits
–sleeping in while my husband goes to fetch the wide-awake toddler from her crib
–magazines - almost any kind, but particularly women’s mags and gossip/celebrity ones
–my newest favorite: caramel ice cream, with chocolate sauce

3. Journey (no specific qualification here)
4. Bon Jovi (circa “Livin’ on a Prayer”)

August 30th, 2007 at 4:36 am
1. Reading a trashy, trampy romance novel while curled on the couch with a blanket and soundly ignoring the laundry.
2. Sneaking a few M&Ms when the husband isn’t looking.
3. Going back to bed for 45 minutes after the husband leaves for work.
4. Breakfast for dinner. It just feels so naughty.
5. Eating the cake batter left on the bowl and spoon after mixing…and maybe a little extra.

August 30th, 2007 at 10:36 am
Making a pan of brownies and being the only one that licks the spoon and/or bowl (even with 3 kids and a hungry husband who I just don’t tell until they’re done)
Googling every ex-boyfriend I can think of to see what kind of lives they’re leading now
Down with Love (I mean, have you ever seen this movie? Guilty, very guilty)
Picking stray hairs off my husband’s shoulders, then pretending I didn’t know it was actually growing out of his skin, but that I thought it was just sitting there (gotta get rid of those–yecchhhh)
Going off to put my baby to sleep so that I can get a few quiet moments to nod off in the rocking chair (”he just wouldn’t go to sleep…really”)
Why do lists control my life anyway? If I don’t take one to the grocery store I spend twice as much and if I do my baby chews it up and I can’t make it out, so I forget everything. If I list things I wish I’d done, I feel incomplete, and if I list things I have done, I feel embarassed. If I write a list of chores, I do laundry just so I can draw a line through it on the list, but I keep checking to see if anything else gets crossed off by anyone else. It never does, and I just rip up the list to get even. What would I do without lists? 1. Go crazy 2. OOPS there I go again….

Snacking In bed beside my husband as He sleeps watching TV.

Walking outdoors and talking to God looking at the nature surrounding me. Giving HIM thanks for the good and the bad in the world, teaching me daily to appreciate what I have and to give whenever I can.
Vacations ….. I haven’t had one in over 4 years.
Whenever my sewing-machine thread doesn’t screw up while I’m sewing.

1. Quilting fabric! I have more than I can make quilts with but it’s so seductive.

August 31st, 2007 at 9:48 pm
Eating violet creams or Bendicks mints in the front room with the door closed, flipping through the unread mags that are collecting…
A quick kip on the couch on the porch after dinner, hidden by the Dutchman’s pipe vines that are out of control…
Riding my bicycle around my neighbourhood after midnight…
Using up all the leftover bits of cheese to make cheese’n'onion popovers, then gorging…
Sneaking writing time…

It’s too late, but I like writing lists anyway.
1) Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pies. Soooo bad for me. Sooo tasty.
2) Walrus Ice Cream. Local ice cream joint (www.walrusicecream.com), best in the world. Chocolate cake batter with oreos and chocolate chip cookie dough mixed in in a chocolate dipped waffle cone.
3) Going to the library and coming home with a stack of books I wouldn’t ever buy (and would likely have difficulty admitting I’ve read) and churning through them.
4) Eating aforementioned oatmeal cream pies while enthroned on a pile of pillows on my bed reading said books I would never buy.
5) Chilly sunrises on the back porch with a cup of hot chocolate and a totally unfair amount of marshmellows.
