I like this one: http://tiajudy.com/soxform.htm

You look up the # of stitches you want for the foot/leg of the sock then insert the numbers from the chart. It creates a heel-flap sock. Of course, I just completed my first toe-up pair, thought I hated it... but started another pair toe-up immediately.

Interweave Knits/summer 2007 has a great pattern with size and gauge tables by Ann Budd. The clear figures of the methods are very helpful.

Here, under free patterns, both "generic" and "detailed" toe-up patterns: http://wendyknits.net/finished-work-free-patterns-tips/sub-page

This was the first sock pattern I ever used and it was quite easy to follow!

Wendy Johnson has a wonderful free "pattern" (more like a recipe/formula) for download at her site (http://wendyknits.net).

In addition to the already mentioned knitty.com toe-up sock formula, you might have your mom sign up for Knitting Daily, http://www.knittingdaily.com/ and/or peruse the Interweave Knits site for free patterns. Although I don't think it's been offered for free on their site [yet], there was a pattern for a simple toe-up sock, On Your Toes Socks, in the Summer 2007 IK issue. Even if your mom can't find it for free, it's worth seeking out. It uses the backward yarnover method for the short row heel, a technique worth knowing if she doesn't already.

There are several options:

http://www.wendyjohnson.net/blog/sockpattern.htm

www.knitty.com: there are several. Widdershins is a cool one with the traditional heel flap (many toe up designs use a short row heel). i found the supporting documentation invaluable as i made my socks on a different # of stitches than the designer and had trouble making sense of the numbers: http://k2knits.blogspot.com/2007/03/revisiting-widdershin-heel.html

best of luck

I thought of knitty.com as well. Here is their universal toe-up sock formula: http://www.knitty.com/issuesummer06/PATTuniversalsock.html
I actually used this for my first ever pair of socks and they turned out great.

The knitty one springs to my mind too- there is a pattern where you knit a swatch, take a few measurements, plug in the numbers and it tells you how to knit a toe-up sock to fit your foot it your wool! Voila!
