Whiptips - toe up socks

Whiptips craft advice column for readers to ask questions or offer advice by leaving comments. Whiptips archive here. Questions to whiptips@gmail.com.

My mum has recently discovered Whip Up, but has not quite figured out the search button - she wrote me an email looking for a pattern, tutorial or information on knitting toe-up socks.

Dear Kath, Just been browsing whipup looking for the pattern for knitting socks from the toe up. Is there a direct index? I went into knitting and crochet and I have been going back and forth and found plenty of sock patterns but its the one pattern where I knit from the toe up that I am looking for.

Does anyone have any advice for my mum - links to free online patterns or tutorials. Thank you all.

http://www.knitty.com has lots and lots of different sock patterns for free, I’m sure they’d have one that would be the kind that she is looking for…. and lots of other great patterns as well!

The knitty one springs to my mind too- there is a pattern where you knit a swatch, take a few measurements, plug in the numbers and it tells you how to knit a toe-up sock to fit your foot it your wool! Voila!

The link in my name goes to a PDF for DNA socks toe up.

I thought of knitty.com as well. Here is their universal toe-up sock formula: http://www.knitty.com/issuesummer06/PATTuniversalsock.html
I actually used this for my first ever pair of socks and they turned out great.

    There are several options:

http://www.knitty.com: there are several. Widdershins is a cool one with the traditional heel flap (many toe up designs use a short row heel). i found the supporting documentation invaluable as i made my socks on a different # of stitches than the designer and had trouble making sense of the numbers: http://k2knits.blogspot.com/2007/03/revisiting-widdershin-heel.html

    best of luck

In addition to the already mentioned knitty.com toe-up sock formula, you might have your mom sign up for Knitting Daily, http://www.knittingdaily.com/ and/or peruse the Interweave Knits site for free patterns. Although I don’t think it’s been offered for free on their site [yet], there was a pattern for a simple toe-up sock, On Your Toes Socks, in the Summer 2007 IK issue. Even if your mom can’t find it for free, it’s worth seeking out. It uses the backward yarnover method for the short row heel, a technique worth knowing if she doesn’t already.

Wendy Johnson has a wonderful free “pattern” (more like a recipe/formula) for download at her site (http://wendyknits.net).

Here, under free patterns, both “generic” and “detailed” toe-up patterns: http://wendyknits.net/finished-work-free-patterns-tips/sub-page

This was the first sock pattern I ever used and it was quite easy to follow!

Interweave Knits/summer 2007 has a great pattern with size and gauge tables by Ann Budd. The clear figures of the methods are very helpful.

    I like this one: http://tiajudy.com/soxform.htm

You look up the # of stitches you want for the foot/leg of the sock then insert the numbers from the chart. It creates a heel-flap sock. Of course, I just completed my first toe-up pair, thought I hated it… but started another pair toe-up immediately.
