forum: discussion

I was curious as to what you guys think, but does it seem like crafting/ homemade projects are more popular lately than they have been in years? For example, I’m in my early twenties, and everyone around me (that is also in their twenties) is knitting! (okay, some are croqueting…)[crocheting] Men and women alike.

I wanted to hear some feedback on this. Why do you think it’s having it’s own… renaissance… if you will. I’m more interested in knitting, since it’s something that i usually associate with my grandmother and pregnant aunts (no offense!!) but really, overall, I’m intrigued. I’d love to hear what you have to say, or if you know any good articles that are related.

Possibly the reason for a rebirth in involvement in crafts is due to the fact that our lives are so often spent in front of a computer screen, that we need to do something tactile which actually gives us a real object to hold in our hand, rather than a virtual object!

hehe i can’t help it! i’m giggling. my guess is that you actually mean “crocheting” here since “croqueting” involves a mallet, balls, and little metal arch thingamabobs. altho, maybe not. maybge all your friends ARE doing this. :D

i think handcrafts really are making a resurgence because we like to see where something comes from, how it’s made, be involved in the process, feel accomplishment in that process. i think some part of it may be a little be of rebellion, too, against the vast materialism/consumerism of past years that focused struclty on buying the finished product.

I feel that internet is doing this, bringing craftsters together, so there is a feeling that crafting is more popular now.

I think you’re right. I’m in the same position you’re in–mid-twenties and surrounded by knitters who spend their day job in front of a computer. In, say, the ’80s, people didn’t have to specifically seek out time to spend doing something non-electronic, so crafting was an odd hobby at best and a necessary chore at worst. Now it’s a treat to sit down at a table without a computer and physically pick at cloth and thread and notions!

all of us who knit know how rewarding and relaxing it can be, i am 50 and my mom taught me to knit at the age of 11 and the funny thing is i can judge how well i am doing mental health wise by knitting, if i am not knitting i am really depressed, but if i am knitting then all is well with the world, guess i am backwards. anyway i think this new resergence of these 2 crafts goes hand in hand with the stress at the job, people were getting told that their jobs were killing them and that they had to relax, i used to work with the mentally ill, and 25 years ago when it wasn’t in fashion i and 3 other people used it as a real stress buster at night, the other 3 were men by the way, anyway someone realized you could kill numerous birds with one stone, relaxation, making an object to show your love for someone, and saving money by using your time and energy to make gifts, which would cost through the nose if you went out and bought a real hand knit sweater, or what ever you decided to knit for a dear friend, by the way all my 17 year old son’s friends want me to knit them hoodies for christmas,
