White vinegar in a downy ball is an awesome alternative to dryer sheets. Your clothes will be soft and not static-y and not covered in chemicals

I make my own powdered laundry detergent -- but I just use 1 part borax and 1 part washing soda. It works great and cleans the clothes just fine. I do put the powder in the machine first and set the water on warm for the first few minutes to dissolve the powder before adding clothes and changing over to cold.

I've been using homemade for about 4 years now. I use my food processor to make it easy (some folks grate by hand-way too labor intensive for me. Plus I'd probably bleed all over it at some point).

I even did a cost comparison on the homemade vs. storebought per load on my blog once. (there is a link to it on my sidebar under "favorite posts"). I came up with Tide costing about $.43 a load, and homemade costing $.12
