book: stitch graffiti

Stitch Graffiti: Unexpected Cross-Stitch (Unexpected Cross Stitch) by Heather Holland-Daly published by Interweave Press (April 1, 2008).

Get brave with your cross-stitch, was a quote from one review I read of this book. And that really summed it up for me too. This book really allows you to get a little braver and try some new designs, have some fun, get inspired and go beyond cute sampler patterns.

This book doesn’t go all out however – its no Subversive Cross Stitch but it does have some interesting ideas. motifs, tattoo designs and slogans, some fun patches and colourful designs.

There are instructions for beginners at the front and a stitch dictionary at the back, but otherwise more advanced stitchers are well catered for.

whipup 2009 calendar: featured artist

The whipup 2009 calendar features 13 artists/makers/designers whose work has been featured on whipup. This year I hand picked the participants but next year I hope to open it up for everyone. Over 13 days I will be featuring each of the participants – so you can get to know them (if you don’t already) a little better.

December featured artist is Jared Flood: www.brooklyntweed.net. Jared is a knitwear designer and photographer based in New York.

book: bags that rock

Bags That Rock: Knitting on the Road with Kelley Deal by Kelley Deal published by Lark Books (October 7, 2008).

This book is by Kelley Deal from Indie rock band the Breeders. And is lots of fun. The patterns are mostly simple and basic variations of others you might have seen around. There are some novel variations and quite cool bits of equipment she has recycled for bag handles. The best part of this book is for indie rock music fans, there are lots of on the road anecdotes and stories and interviews.

The projects are pretty fun, not all are ‘rock n roll’ in style, but there is plenty of that as well as some more toned down options. There is some fun graffiti embroidery patterns, a fantastic turtle-neck sweater bag, lots of felted bags and straight knitted bags, some crochet and some fancy stitches but not much. The uniqueness of these bags comes from the straps that are utilised – there is a woven jute strap, vintage scarves, recycled leather belts, grapevine branches, guitar strings and i-cord, drum sticks and electric cords and cables.

Instructions are pretty standard, no extra diagrams or illustrations though to help out, just lots of colourful photos. Easy knitting, fun projects, entertaining reading.
