Sew Fabulous Fabric by Alice Butcher & Ginny Farquhar, published by David & Charles (September 18, 2008).

20 ideas for sewing something for your home. These patterns have a home-making focus, and many of the patterns have a child size option. From stuffed toys to gift card, table clothes and christmas stockings; this book has something for everyone. The complexity of the projects can also be tailored to suit the experience of the crafter, with many of the projects being very simple and suitable for beginners, the projects really come into their own with the finishing details.

The main focus of the book is on letting the fabric inspire the craft – whether its a scrap of fabric or a pair of old jeans that is used. The variation of photos showing finished projects is really helpful – the same purse is pictured in three different fabric combinations. Each project has its own introduction, materials list and clearly articulated instructions. The hand drawn process illustrations do let the book down a little as sometimes it is hard to follow which side of fabric is up.

The style of most projects could be described as ‘cottage’ or ‘folk’; but really it is up to the crafter to select their own fabrics which will alter the mood of the piece.

About the reviewer: Heather is a freelance designer, film maker and generally crafty gal. She loves to have a craft jam / craft-a-noon with friends and recently completed a crochet bouquet to take down the isle.
