I love Techknitting: http://techknitting.blogspot.com/ The illustrations are top notch, and she explains new techniques in a way I find really helpful. She also discusses the differences between stitches, why certain types of knitting curl, and all sorts of interesting topics.
Check the indexes (indices?), but I like just generally reading it; I'm not a great knitter (yet!), but I learn a lot just looking at them.

Thanks for compiling this list! You could add GarnStudio (http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/kategori_oversikt.php) all their patterns are free, and available in up to 8 different languages!

A little less than a year and a half ago, I wrote up this starter kit for DIY Life -- our software couldn't quite handle the length of the article, so it's missing a bullet point or two at the end. Supply lists, book recommendations, links to tutorial and pattern sites, etc etc etc.
