book: knit to be square
Knit to Be Square: Domino Designs to Knit and Felt by Vivian Hoxbro published by Interweave Press (August 19, 2008)
As both a keen crocheter and knitter I have to say that while I have crocheted plenty of squares in my time, knitting them has not been on my agenda, until this book. What caught my eye is the way the squares are knitted with shaping diagonal from the bottom left corner to the top right hand corner. This modular knit method seems to form the basis of everything made from wraps to hats, bags, and back packs.
There is a pair of slippers in the book made with this method, that I rather fancy making, the pattern sizes are for all ages and the styling makes it suitable for men or women. There are patterns for any thing you could imagine that can be made from these squares. All very colourful and interesting.
Instructions in the making of each item are very clear, plenty of detail and clearly illustrated. At the back of the book is a glossary as well as clear instructions for the beginner on how to do the basic knit and the increases, in fact illustration of most anything a beginner may need to help them on their way.
This is an interesting book with the patterns based on one simple basic design that can make so many things even beyond the patterns shown, you are limited only by your own imagination. Definitely recommend not just for those starting knitting.
About the reviewer: Janette spends her retirement working on all things yarn related. When not knitting, crocheting, felting or spinning she is slowly doing up an old weaving loom and plans to have a go on that as soon as she possibly can.
