pattern: Philip does the Mowing (small quilt)

About the designer: Tracey Petersen has recently launched her own quilt design website after quilting for many years: here:

I am currently designing small wallhangings for children which incorporate their faces printed on fabric, surrounded by an imaginary scene. They are an absolute delight to make – quick and simple and suitable for all levels of sewing skills – from beginner to expert.

Materials:
26 inch square green background fabric
Scraps of other fabrics for appliqué – red, blues, black, white, flesh tones
Printable fabric sheet
Fusible webbing
30 inch square batting/ wadding
30 inch square batting fabric

Step 1.
Select a suitable digital photograph. Using a photo editing program to crop and edit the photo so that the face measures approximately 2.5 inches. Following the manufacturer’s instructions print this digital image onto the printable sheet. Then Iron the fusible webbing onto the reverse of the printable sheet so it is behind the photograph and cut around the face.

Step 2.
Trace all of the appliqué shapes [download the pdf template here] onto fusible webbing. Cut roughly around each shape. Fuse the appliqué shapes onto the reverse of your selected fabrics, then cut each shape out accurately.

Step 3.
Remove the fusible webbing paper backing from all the appliqué shapes and from the printed photograph. Lay the shapes out onto your green fabric backing using the photograph of the finished quilt as a guide. Then Iron all of the pieces into place.

Step 4.
Stitch around each shape using a small zig-zag stitch. Then lay out the backing fabric right side down. Layer batting on top, then the appliquéd quilt top. Smooth out all layers and pin together.

Quilt using a sewing machine and bind with a contrasting binding to finish.
