Book: born again vintage

Born-Again Vintage: 25 Ways to Deconstruct, Reinvent, and Recycle Your Wardrobe by Bridgett Artise and Jen Karetnick and published by Potter Craft (December 9, 2008).

Reinventing, refashioning, clothing mashups and hacks – they are fun, economical and fodder for creative endeavors. The latest refashioning book on the market is born again vintage, which remixes op-shop / thrift store finds to create original designs – some more successful than others.

I love the crochet blanket remixed with the summer frock, and the the cover outfit is two vintage dresses mashed together. There is also a really cute shirt combined with a t-shirt for a super cool blouse, and the capelet, although unusual, works for its uniqueness – the same goes for the boot pants, where the bottom halve of jeans are substituted for ribbed sweater.

On the downside all the designs rely on the availability of particular second hand /vintage outfits – and while there are lots of glossy photos, there are no illustrations describing how the clothes have been deconstructed and the instructions are quite minimal as well. For experienced sewers this will present no problem but the beginner sewer may have some trouble knowing where to start.

Thanks for the review, my 15 year old loves discovering hidden treasures in opt shops and we have just started revamping things to suit. Great fun and great for the environment as well.
