Magic Books & Paper Toys: Flip Books, E-Z Pop-Ups & Other Paper Playthings to Amaze & Delight by Esther K. Smith, Potter Craft (November 18, 2008).
After the huge success of Esther K Smith’s previous book How to Make Books: Fold, Cut & Stitch Your Way to a One-of-a-Kind Book which was probably my favourite craft book from last year. I was super keen to see what she did next. This book is smaller, but no less packed full of fantastic ideas for paper.
Esther reveals the secrets to pop-up books, flip books, origami fold books and more. The accordion fold up city scape is fantastic, the kids are addicted to the pop up books and the accordion flip flap album book is very special. The paper toys section is even better, with simple childhood toys like cootie catcher (in Australia these are called chatter boxes), spinner toys, and a whole bunch of flexagons (a new term for me). A flexagon is a folded paper contraptions that when flexed reveals hidden panels. They require precise folding but are hypnotic and addictive – just like this book – a must have for paper lovers.
