Two things that Sprout(age 4) swears that she can't live without are recycled crayon "cookies"* and a variety of textured items for crayon rubbings. You can purchase plastic texture plates from craft and hobby stores or from Oriental Trading Company online. Sprout is just as happy with textures made by gluing yarn, twine and other things onto cardboard or doing rubbings of interesting leaves, coins, etc...

*To make the crayon cookies, preheat oven to 250F, insert muffin tin partially filled with broken-up crayons, turn off oven and allow residual heat to melt crayons together... Sprout loves it when we do Kalideoscope crayon cookies which are a mix of all colors but I like having some on hand that are blends of like colors. The crayon cookies give very interesting results on crayon rubbings and are great for coloring in large areas like backgrounds...

Great lists! I would add a good tub of homemade play dough for the younger crowd and clay for everyone... and some fun tools(raid the kitchen drawers)to go with it.

I would like to add a really nice black permanent marker pen. Or a "Black Vivid" as we say in New Zealand. No children's art box is complete without one. They just seem to need one!

i agree with a mix of both lists. an easel and daddy-shirt-turned-smock have been great here, too. and a wall to display art. see here: http://whichname.blogspot.com/2008/09/being-organized.html
and such a timely post for our household. i just blogged about art!
