my favourite song lyric has to be from the white stripes: ‘every breath that is in your lungs is a tiny little gift for me’. my husband said this to me in his speech at our wedding and i say it to my kids all the time.

Lyrics to “Life’s Been Good to Me So Far”, sung by Joe Walsh on the movie soundtrack FM. Definitely a mood lifter with its humor.
Love the whole thing, but if I had to pick just one verse it’d be:
They say I’m lazy but it takes all my time
(Everybody say oh, yeah, oh, yeah)
I keep on going, guess I’ll never know why
Life’s been good to me so far, yeah, yeah, yeah

beauty is having nothing to do
But sit and look at the art of you
From Rick Seibold’s song Can’t Go On.

I love Atticus Finch telling his daughter Scout to see life in everyone’s shoes – to put on their shoes and skin to see their world from a different perspective. Such a poignant part of Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird.

This may not be good luck entering first, but oh well. Are the winners going to be randomly selected?
I may be all freaked out and confused
But I still wouldn’t wanna be you

From the book, The Elegance of the Hedgehog . . .
“an elsewhere that had come to us, an always within never”
I was drawn to your contest because of the hummingbird. My mom loved hummingbirds and that reminded me of this quote. I will always cherish the memories I have of her, even though I will never see her again in this lifetime.

“An opal-hearted country…”
Dorothea Mackellar, “My Country”

For weeks I have been humming one of my favorites. “Every Day Is Like Sunday” except in my head it is Mr Lawrence that sings it and not Morrissey :)
June 1st, 2009 at 4:11 am
One of my fave songs is “When the love is right” by Tourniquet. Love the line “When the love is right The path is bright.” This song was our wedding dance song :)

Right now, my favorite quote from a book is:
“Fire and water don’t really mix. You could say they’re incompatible. But when they do love each other, they love passionately.”
It’s from Inkspell by Cornelia Funke.

The quirky Kate Miller-Heidke with the killer voice:
Let’s leave now
Let’s leave them,
their point of view
My favourite place is me and you
you have to hear it to believe it (from the song “Space they cannot touch”)

I would love to actually read what mix tape has to offer. I’ve seen sneak peeks on its website, and it looks lovely so far.
My favourite song lyrics is from “Backyard” from Natasha Bedingfield:
“It’s been too long, don’t think I’ve seen you smile at me for quite awhile. We’re so busy doing things, we haven’t noticed what’s missing”
For me, it’s about realising that we should take a breather once in a while and always appreciate those around you. :)

Crosby, Stills and Nash…”our house is a very, very ,very fine house”. Makes me smile.

So who’s gonna love you now baby?
Who’s gonna love you now baby?
When you’re done fighting that war at sea
Get on that ship and sail back to me
Brother, by Little Birdy.
It’s my baby brother’s 21st this week, so I’ve been thinking about him and this song.

This was not an easy task, but it was fun. I enjoyed thinking about my all time favorite songs and their lyrics. But the one I had to choose is “I sing the Body Electric” from the 1980’s tv show Fame. Both because it is Graduation Season and becuase the title is from a Walt Whitman poem.
“I sing the body electric
I celebrate the me yet to come
I toast to my own reunion
When I become one with the sun ”
If you are nostalgic for the 80’s you can see the video here:

Just thinking about these lyrics gives me shivers down my spine.
“Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it’ll turn your head around”
James Taylor – Fire And Rain
Also, my eyes always go a little misty when I here these lines from Memphis Tennessee by Chuck Berry:
“Last time I saw Marie she’s waving me good-bye
With hurry home drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye”
June 1st, 2009 at 9:04 am
I dearly love Elvis Costello, one of my favorite lines is from “Shabby Doll” on the album Imperial Bedroom: “There’s a girl in distress, there’s always a girl in this dress…”
June 1st, 2009 at 9:42 am
This is really hard, but I think I’m going to go with The Magnetic Fields “100,000 Fireflies”: “Why do we keep shrieking when we mean soft things? We should be whispering all the time.” Stephin Merritt, you slay me with your lyrics.
June 1st, 2009 at 10:00 am
I think my all-time favorite lyrics come from the Boss — Thunder Road, of course. Though all of Springsteen’s songs are lyrically masterful (he is THE BOSS)!! :)
“There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away.
They haunt this dusty beach town in the skeleton frames of burnt out chevrolets.
They scream your name at night in the streets — your graduation gown lies in rags at your feet…”
So so beautiful!

“A small wind blew gently from the east, a wind mild and murmurous and full of rain. It was a god omen.” —The Good Earth by Pearl Buck. This book has saved my sanity over and over again.

“Springtime and the promise of an open fist
A tattoo of a flower on a broken wrist ”
from Lovesong of the buzzard
by the super talented Sam Bean of Iron & Wine.

making everybody look like ants
from way up there, you and I, you and I, you and I”
by Ingrid Michaelson
June 1st, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Oooh…this is hard, but I’d say the quote I most need to follow is, “Don’t panic!!” from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

“We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.” Chuck Palahniuk
June 1st, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Basically every line of every Neutral Milk Hotel song, but my favorite might be.. “What a beautiful face I have found in this place that is circling all round the sun. What a beautiful dream, that could flash on the screen in a blink of an eye and be gone from me.” and ” I will shout until they know what I mean.”

GooGoo Dolls, Name:
You grew up way too fast
And now there’s nothing to believe
And reruns all become our history
A tired song keeps playing on a tired radio
And I won’t tell no one your name
I like these lyrics because so many of us have this sort of past/childhood that is defined by the shows we watched and the music we listened to more than the people we knew or the things we did. It’s sad in a way.
June 1st, 2009 at 8:19 pm
“all i need is the air that i breathe and to love you”-Air Supply
i think that sums it all up!
June 1st, 2009 at 9:40 pm
True love will find you in the end. Daniel Johnston.
June 1st, 2009 at 10:44 pm
theme from “enterprise,” “Faith of the Heart”
sounds better with music, but it touches something within me.
Cause I’ve got faith of the heart.
I’m going where my heart
will take me.
I’ve got faith to believe.
I can do anything.
I’ve got strength of the soul.
And no one’s going to bend
or break me.
I can reach any star.
I’ve got faith,
I’ve got faith,
Faith of the heart.

It is very hard to pick favorite lyrics or lines!
I just read The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, and the preface is wonderful. My favorite lines from that are:
“Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault.
Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope.
They are the elect who whom beautiful things mean only Beauty.”

If I lay here
If I just lay here
would you lie with me and just forget the world?
by Snow patrol – chasing cars
the song that was playing when i met my man and we will have it play at our wedding in December
June 2nd, 2009 at 2:11 am
I think my all time favourite lyric would be from the wonderful Carly Simon “I can’t help, I’ve got to have you” from the song I’ve got to have you, a truly beautiful song.

‘Men have forgotten this truth,’ said the fox. ‘But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.’
The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery
I know it’s a little dull maybe, a little predictable perhaps, but so true and so profound. I love this book and anyone who hasn’t read it yet should run and get it out NOW! :)

“Say whatever you have to say,
I’ll stand by you.
And do whatever you have to do,
To get it out and not become,
A reactionary to hurt the ones you love.
You know you never meant to but you did,
(Oh yeah yeah).
And be whoever you have to be,
I won’t judge you.
And sing whatever you have to sing,
To get it out and not become,
A recluse about your house come out.
I know you never meant to but you did,
(Oh) but you did.
Still I need your sway,
‘Cause you always pay for it.
And I and I need your soul,
‘Cause you’re always soulful.
And I and I need your heart,
‘Cause you’re always in the right places.
And take whatever you have to take,
You know I love you.”
Twisted, needy love song Sway by the Kooks, that has caught me in its grasp and will not let me go.
June 2nd, 2009 at 12:56 pm
my favorite is from Everlong by the Foo Fighters: “Breathe out, so I can breathe you in….Hold you in”.
