If making everything from scratch, feeding/caring/washing for your family means more time on your hands (as was the case of my great-grandmother...they even made soap from scratch in huge vats), I think the author didn't look at the vaste majority of women in the US. Maybe it was different in other parts of the world (and a few households) but I don't think knitting was a form of entertainment for most women with families.Interesting article...and my dad had to wear those knit pants as a young boy in Bulgaria...and hated them too! lol

The odd 1930′s idea “that many women had time on their hands during which they could knit…” during the Great Depression made me cough. Strangely raunchy - even back then I was too embarrassed to wear them, I must have been about 11 - considering who had made them. the whole leggings under a skirt craze had not taken off then.I second the don't bring back the bikini.what a great historical wrap up. I love all those Depression home economies. Like using banana in cakes instead of eggs.... Thanks Kristen and Kath

Ha ha- the Uruguayan grandma of some friends I grew up with once knitted us all – or should that be crocheted? – some woollen trousers.
