This is a very sweet little dress but the method used is actually “shirring” and not “smocking” at all. Traditional English Smocking consists of regular gathers on the wrong side of the fabric done by using a gathering machine or done by hand using a series of regular spaced dots which are then gathered by hand. The front or right side of the fabric is then “smocked” using various overcast stitches catching a part of each pleat. When done the gathering threads are removed and the fabric is stretchy.
