Traditional English Smocking consists of regular gathers on the wrong side of the fabric done by using a gathering machine or done by hand using a series of regular spaced dots which are then gathered by hand. The front or right side of the fabric is then &quot;smocked&quot; using various overcast stitches catching a part of each pleat.
