The intricate sewn drawings of China Marks are showing at Luise Ross Gallery, New York, from 17 September through October. This image shown here is titled ‘Heavenly creatures’ and is made with a laborious process of fusible adhesive and fabric and stitched layers. The process which China Marks uses in these intricate stitched drawings is described on her website here.

Jacqui sent in this link to a tutorial she made for making an easy change mattress protector for little ones.

Little waterproof mattress protectors for kids when they’re out of diapers at night. I know, not the most glamorous item ever; but with this really simple method you can make them out of cute fabrics that the kids like and then they’re something they can enjoy having on their bed and you don’t have to change the whole bed out at 2am! Just whip it off and put on a new one.

About the author: Hi there, I’m Lucy from Yellow Moon Kids Crafts. As the summer holidays draw to an end, your kids (like mine) might be suffering from the unfortunate combination of getting bored of their time off but also starting to dread the return to school. Here are a few crafty ideas to help out, keeping them entertained for the last few days of the holiday and hopefully getting them a bit more excited about returning to school!

Pencil cases are one of the most important components of a well-stocked school satchel. Here are a few ideas:
- denim is a great material for pencil cases, it’s durable and is a classic symbol of ‘cool’,
- think about cutting up a few of those clothes that were grown out of over the holidays and making a patchwork pencil case,
- a pencil case with a photograph! Check out these step by step instructions.

Labelling stuff is one of the great joys of going back to school! Ahem. Despite the bore, labelling all your children’s back-to-school kit is a worthwhile endeavour. Instead of buying expensive labels or a machine to do all the work, just get hold of some masking tape, stickers and fibre tip pens and get going!

Hair bands: Depending on the school your daughter attends (sorry lads, this one’s not for you!) she might be allowed to wear something more exciting than a plain old hair band in her hair. Why not let her have a dig through your bag of scrap materials and then help her make a few of these much more exciting DIY hairbands.

book: Clay so cute

Clay So Cute!: 21 Polymer Clay Projects for Cool Charms, Itty-Bitty Animals, and Tiny Treasures by sherri Haab. Watson-Guptill (July 21, 2009).

I don’t see many polymer clay books around – so was delighted to find this one so friendly. With a really good tools and techniques section for beginners, and taking you through the basics with projects ranging from super sweet and simple to more complex fiddly projects.

Sweet projects include candy cane inspired bracelets, cookie cutter pendants and rings, making your own buttons for jewelry, pressing shells for faux shell pendant jewelry and making your own wishing stones. Then there is whole miniature faux food jewelry thing which is so totally fun – tiny mini cupcakes and licorice allsorts charms, and the little robotic dolls are cute too.

I found the instructions and directions to be very clear and concise – I would have liked more miniature food charm projects – but maybe that is for a more advanced book. Lots of fun – perfect for teenage girls.
