here is a really neat and fun idea – reusing tic tac containers to make mini vases – Brittni from paper n stitch says “They can be used in a variety of ways…clustered together for an arrangement of flowers or used on their own. These would also make great party favors for guests at a dinner party as well with a little flower inside.”

The Sewing Bible: A Modern Manual of Practical and Decorative Sewing Techniques By Ruth Singer, Potter Craft; 1 edition (November 10, 2009).
If you know of Ruth Singer’s work through either her blog, her flickr site or in real life as a textile historian, then you know that her ability to manipulate fabric and create interesting surface designs on fibre is awe inspiring stuff.
Her book published as The Sewing Bible in the USA and Sew It Up in the UK, is an instructional manual for both the beginning sewer and those looking for more advanced techniques. I expect her second book – due out later this year will continue with more advanced techniques. However this book is more than enough to get started and whet your appetite for some adventurous sewing.
The basics are covered with practical techniques such as bindings, hems, zippers and more decorative techniques include reverse applique, pleats, and scalloped edges. Masterclasses throughout the book go into detail to explain some of the trickier techniques – there are masterclasses on mitered corners, invisible zips, bound buttonholes, decorative box pleating, trapunto and more. The book also includes projects utilising the techniques – from bags, toys, textile jewelry, pillows and curtains.
I was incredibly impressed with the amount of work that Ruth has put into this book – and am so glad to have it as part of my sewing library – I know it will be a useful resource for my future projects.
