Take-Along Knitting: 20+ Easy Portable Projects from Your Favorite Authors North Light Books (December 29, 2009)

This excellent knitting book of small projects starts off with the basics of requirements including tools and materials, a useful needle size chart and different types of yarn are briefly explained and a gauge chart is included. There is a good basic introduction to getting started for the beginner, including how to cast on two different ways and then continues with knitting lessons in different methods of knitting, ie continental, circular knitting and cable etc as well as a brief introduction to crochet and felting the item on completion. All this is illustrated step by step.

The projects allow you to test your new found skills with hats, crocheted and knitted from beanies to the felted Fedora. I thought the chapter on socks and stockings were very nice and smart. Between the well illustrated lessons at the beginning and the good index and resources listing at the back of the book, plus all the inspirational patterns for small items that you can make when traveling or in those odd spare moments one may have – I have found this to be a lovely addition to my knitting library.

Its been a quiet convalescing sort of week, raining outside and crocheting inside. The sort of week you only have when you bring a new baby home – you know the sort of week – homemaking and nurturing and nesting – that’s the sort of week I have had and it has been bliss. My dear friend Kate made me a pair of the most delicious knitted ankle socks – and I have been wearing them every day this week along with my crocheted hats. And because my husband was jealous of the handknit socks I have been busy crocheting socks for him – he has big feet and I am using fine sock yarn and a small hook so its been an odyssey. The kids have not been slouches either – this morning we were treated to breakfast in bed and during the week lots of fun was had with felt balls. But on with the crafty news…

here is a useful looking bag tutorial – perfect for a camera or craft bag… Also Pikaland is running an Artist Bootcamp for artists and illustrators – with weekly exercises and personalized, constructive, one-on-one critiques to help emerging artists find their footing and ways to set themselves apart from others in the vast online world - find out more.

in the meantime – make something!

  • eco travel lid + cork vases or maybe make some altered flip flops
  • the fringe skirt was hilarious and good + diy chandelier looks pretty good too
  • crochet yourself some potholders – I am going to or knit this vintage style cardi (or do both)
  • do some crochet with the help of this super book
  • fabric button necklaces – I think so
  • making this pouf is on my to-do list
  • Happy crafting!
