June 2010

Colleen sent in this clock project: My dad Barry Babcock and I created this clock (photo attached) one day using a scrap piece of plywood and some newspaper out of the recycling bin. We also included a non-woodworker method for creating the clock. We thought that it is the perfect project to make for your dad or with your dad in time for Father’s Day.

Reviewed by: Janette has been knitting and crocheting for over 60 years, she also spins and dyes her own wool.

Hand Dyeing Yarn and Fleece: Custom-Color Your Favorite Fibers with Dip-Dyeing, Hand-Painting, Tie-Dyeing, and Other Creative Techniques by Gail Callahan. Storey Publishing, LLC; Spi edition (January 8, 2010).

If you ever wanted to play with dyes or even seriously set up a small craft business of your own in which you need to dye your materials, this is the book for you. The book covers everything, from the setting up of where you intend to work, safety features and record keeping of the various methods you used to achieve your project results.

There are well set out instructions for dyeing different fibres, with good photos of the results – I found that ones hand was virtually being held all the way through the book.

“Out of the pot, onto your needles!” Is chapter 6 – turning your hand dyed yarn into finished projects. The book itself is designed to inspire from the most amateur to fully experienced crafts person into experimenting with colour and methods to get you started into dyeing your own fibre. Very inspirational!
