Seams to Me: 24 New Reasons to Love Sewing By Anna Maria Horner. Published by Wiley (October 20, 2008)
Anna Maria Horner’s first book Seams to me has been on the shelves for a little while now, but I had not seen it until recently. I have to agree that is well worth the hype. As well as fabulous photographs and styling, the fabrics used are Anna Maria’s own collection – so vibrant and rich, the projects are beautifully finished – many of which have already become classic designs. The real treasure of this book though is the introduction section – sewing lessons and getting started section. Where Anna Maria describes in detail how to set up your sewing room, what materials you will need and more. Anna Maria’s writing style is fresh and readable, she obviously not only knows her stuff but is passionate too. The Sewing lesson chapter takes your through the mysteries of zippers, piping, edgings and bindings with lots of helpful illustrations.
Handmade Beginnings: 24 Sewing Projects to Welcome Baby By Anna Maria Horner. Published by (Wiley (May 3, 2010))
Anna Maria’s most recent book handmade beginnings is not quite as thorough in the introduction and ‘sewing lesson’ section – she doesn’t repeat the information from her previous book, instead she builds on it by teaching us how to sew for mama and pregnancy and for family. Included are introductions to each pattern/project that gives you a little insight into family life with 6 children you know you can trust her advice and that these patterns are well and truly tested. The photography, styling and fabrics are all beautiful and the projects themselves range from practical to whimsical – just what you need for a family. Quilts and toys and even a bag for dad – love it. There is a section on maternity clothing + how to adjust the pattern back again after baby. There are projects for the big kids to help them adjust to a new baby, and projects for the home to make your life a little easier with baby.
Both of these books together make for a fabulous set of sewing books for both the beginner and the well worn sewist.

So you are expecting a baby or know someone who is – here is a collection of baby sweater patterns that I think are lovely and you might want to get out your needles for. The lovely thing about knitting for babies/toddlers is that it doesn’t take very long to finish – such tiny things that knit up quickly.
