Can I say groovy? Or should I say cool? Anyway here are 10 of them – very cool, incredibly groovy bracelets you can make yourself from easily found materials.

  1. Hex nut wrap bracelet - made from hex nuts from the hardware store and cut up cloth from an old piece of clothing. (pictured)
  2. hex nut braided bracelet - again using hex nuts from the hardware and some good old hemp or cotton twine from the hardware or garden shop or your local craft store.
  3. Studded leather bracelet - grab some leather or faux leather off cuts and some screw spikes from your hardware store or local fetish shop! (pictured)
  4. Braid and trim bracelet - trims and ribbons from a craft store.
  5. Rope bracelet – yep using rope – from a hardware store.
  6. Button bracelet - some buttons, fabric and string and you are away. (pictured)

My very good friend and fellow whipuper Kate, made me the hallowig for my birthday – I seriously love it – and am wearing it as I sit and write this. If you too want to knit your friend a wig, especially if they are pulling their hair out trying to organise their 40th birthday bash then here are some fun patterns for you to try.

And while on the hunt for these fun and freaky wigs I stumbled upon some more very cool costume headwear …

Rita from Red pepper quilts is on fire with her quilts – so professional and energetic – and her colour and fabric selection are so glorious – I am in love. Pictured here are just a few of her quilts which have caught my eye recently. Etsy if you are quick.

I am super duper hyped up excited to be able to finally show you the first two books in series of kids craft books I have been working on for Hardie Grant Books. Hardie Grant are a lovely Australian publisher who are well known for their beautiful lifestyle, design and cook books and have sort of recently begun to delve into the craft book scene. You probably already know of them through Pip Lincoln’s Meetmeatmikes books. So I was really excited that they were interested in working with me on their series of craft books for kids. The series is called Kids’ Crafternoon and to start with the first two books in the series are just out – Papercraft and Sewing. Two more books will be out later in the year – Beading and Felting. Isn’t that awesome!

I worked on the book as the editor, bringing together a great bunch of crafters and designers who contributed some wonderful and creative projects to the books. So many creative contributors who I will tell you about a little later – some these folks will be showcasing parts of the book in the coming weeks too – Plus there will be a blog tour later in the month where you can see even more.

You can get your hands on a copy from Booktopia (here and here + more sneak peaks) and at readings too. (Also Amazon UK stocks it too I think)

Hardie Grant are generously offering a copy of each of these books to three whipup readers – isn’t that exciting! So please leave a comment to be in the running – you have 72 hours to enter! Thanks so much for all your great comments. Congratulations Candace, Sadie and Lilly you have been contacted via email.

Let me tell you about the covers - Papercraft cover image the Owl popup card by Larissa holland and the Sewing book cover is Limby the button eye dude pattern by Lizette Greco + Grecolaborativo. However this cover story is a little sad, Lizette’s wonderful Limby doll’s disappeared in the mysterious postal system – never to be seen again. So at the last minute I whipped up a few samples using Lizette’s pattern and tried to recreate the feel of her limby’s as faithfully as I could – to be used in the photoshoot – and there they are on the cover – Lizette’s dolls made by me. Here are Lizette’s Limby dolls here and find out a little more about their story here – I love Barry the limby bear - don’t you?

Every week I get lots of email – and also love to trawl through my rss feeds for cool things – so here i give to you some of my finds and some things that landed in my inbox this week.

If you would like to send press releases or submit your own project please send to submit[at]whipup.net.

It is sort of my birthday this weekend - I am nearly 40! Well I will be at the end of the month – a Leo! But my son Orlando popped out a week before my birthday nine years ago and so each year since my birthday has been hijacked. I don’t mind – its lovely in fact that we share a birthday week but this year is my milestone halfway point birthday year and so I pushed it forward a couple of weeks to get the full benefit. We are having a big party this weekend – a pig on a spit and lots of homemade and yummy food; I made seven quiches, 100 meringues, and some shortbread biscuits, the kids made chocolate brownies and anzac biscuits, plus I am baking two big trays of Galaktoboureko - my current favourite sweet treat. There will be lots of cheese, hummus and big big bowls of salads of all sorts. Mmm a midwinter feast!

I have come across a couple of quality e-publications lately I wanted to tell you about. The first is by Laura Bray and she has a new ebook out where she offers some very valuable advice about how to market your business through the e-newsletter medium. The second is from the gals at One charming party, where you can purchase a themed party pack which includes everything from printable invitations to games, activities and recipes. You can see some sneak previews in their shop or sign up to their newsletter for a free copy. I love the superhero and the Country fair party is super sweet too. And I just had to make sure to mention these summer pops - I am getting me some of these!

I have been thinking a lot lately about what I want to achieve from my life, what my purpose is, what my creative goals are, personal goals – family goals. Analysing what is important, what I need and what I can live without – and what I can’t live without – what are my priorities? All this angst – just like a teenager – but actually I have never been more sure of myself than I am now – about to turn 40 and I feel like my life is on track – I know what I want – finally! After all these years I have a sliver of a clue!

I was sitting in my local cafe yesterday morning, having a cup of coffee, I was a little early for an appointment and had 20 minutes to kill. So I sat and drank a double shot of espresso (I needed it) and as I sketched a few designs in my journal I listened to the conversations going on around me. A sentence sort of popped out from the general hubbub “I am halfway through my degree and I feel like I haven’t learned anything”. Oh what a gem – here I sit, halfway through my life and only just beginning to feel like I may have worked out a few things.

So what have I worked out?

  1. Life is good
  2. Moon face is acceptable
  3. I look cute with pig tails
  4. My bum is not so fat (just wide)
  5. I should’t drink too much red wine
  6. Food additives are evil
  7. A cup of tea can solve many problems
  8. Acceptance of a messy house is good
  9. I don’t have a green thumb
  10. I don’t need so much stuff
  11. I love books
  12. Crochet is good
  13. Hand stitching is not my forte
  14. I want to have lots of adventures
  15. I love baking but not cooking dinner
  16. I want to raise my own cows/goats/pigs/chickens
  17. Sport is over rated
  18. TV is not essential
  19. Reading is essential
  20. People are amazing
  21. Hats suit me
  22. I need lists and notebooks and calendars
  23. I never want to renovate a house ever again
  24. I yearn to go tramping in New Zealand
  25. Steak and salad is a perfect meal

What have you worked out?
