in Sponsored giveaway

We would like to welcome advertiser Lyn Krawczyk of Fibra Artysta to whipup.net today, to feature her business and to offer a fantastic giveaway to our readers.

I have a very simple business philosophy: treat people like you want to be treated and share everything you know.

Artists and crafters are a wonderful group of people, one that I feel honored to be a part of. And through my business, I’m able to move among them and really get a first hand look at the work they are creating. Its thrilling!

My goal is to continue to grow my business through writing and educating. Creating and living an artful life is where my heart lies and the more I can share it with others, the richer life is!

Where to find Fibra Artysta online: store :: website :: blog :: YouTube

Tell us about your background and how you started your business?

I’ve been a fiber artist for eleven years now. I focus mainly on art quilts and wall art. Its been a slow steady evolution – from crazy quilting to using found objects on art quilts and now to fabric collages that incorporate my favorite surface design techniques – the biggest love being screen printing with Thermofax screens.

A couple of years ago Quilting Arts Magazine asked me to do an artist demo at the International Quilt Festival. I chose to show printing with Thermofax screens and the reactions of the show attendees made me realize that the screens needed to be more widely available. They were met with a lot of curiosity and enthusiasm, a kind of spark that made me very excited to share them.

After that demo I came home and set up shop. I began writing articles for magazines about the subject and creating video tutorials and everything just clicked! Screen printing is a prominent technique used in my artwork and I’m madly in love with it.

Items in the giveaway: 2 screens of the winner’s choice (any size, any image including custom screens), 3 bottles of paint - winner chooses the colors, and my DVD “Print Design Compose”

What is the most challenging part of running your own business?

Trying to narrow down ideas! My mind is always spinning a million miles a minute with new and exciting projects and its hard to decide which ones to work on first! :)

Lyn (left) and Jackie Lams ( http://www.studiolams.com/ ) (right). She helps me fill orders in the shop.

What inspires you to do what you do?

Being an artist has been a real gift in my life. Art came to me when I was in my twenties and once I found it, I knew I’d found home.

To put it simply, what I do helps other artists and crafters bring their ideas to life and that gives me great joy to know that I play a small part in that. It may sound like a simple thing – to sell screens for screen printing – but Thermofax screen printing is by far the easiest way to print an image!

I think the fact that its not intimidating has helped many artists and crafters realize that screen printing isn’t something to fret about, that its easy to take on and personalize your work with. I love seeing the light in their eyes when they realize all the possibilities that come with these humble little screens.

Today Fibra Artysta are offering a prize of 2 screens of the winner’s choice (any size, any image including custom screens), 3 bottles of paint , and DVD “Print Design Compose” to one lucky Whipup.net reader. So please leave a comment here to be in the running to win. You have 48 hours to enter. Winner will be chosen at random, announced here and contacted via email. Good luck! Comments are now closed – a winner will be chosen at random and notified here and via email.

In addition Fibra Artysta are offering a discount coupon to whipup.net readers  Use coupon code WUP10 for a 10% discount on everything in Fibra Artysta etsy shop until August 31, 2011.

oh this looks like fun. I’ve read about screen printing in books but never done it. would love to try with some instruction. Thanks for the chance!

2 Sarah Evans August 14, 2011 at 7:27 am

Wow, love your blog, I’d like to know alot more about this technique, it looks really lowtech, a big bulky screen is quite confronting, but the thought of adding another dimension to my work using just a sponge brush, sounds really exciting. I’ll be sure to start screenprinting at home in my humble studio if its this easy. thanks for the chance to win, very interesting,
Sarah.

How cool is this!?! In college, I got my ultimate frisbee team to agree to screen print our own jerseys in order to save some cash; it was a bit of a pain but didn’t turn out to bad.
It great that FA is bring screenprint to the masses in such an easy, doable way. I’d love the chance to show even more folks the awesomeness of screen printing.

4 AmandaL August 14, 2011 at 7:35 am

I’ve tried both screen printing and quilting… But never tried both together. Thats a great idea! My mom got both my girls sewing machines for their birthdays, we will be starting with mini quilts for their baby dolls. I know they would just love if I could screen print something on there for them. Thanks for the opportunity to win such a great prize!

52 Claudia Bontrager August 14, 2011 at 11:18 am

I first watched Lynn on the Interweave site. She is an incredible teacher — concise, doesn’t stretch instructions out endlessly, and is very responsive to email queries (even as busy as she must be). I can’t wait to try thermofax screening because it doesn’t take the typical screen printing equipment — just a screen and some duct tape will get you set up for applying paint. I also can’t wait to try this modality with Decolourant — removing color and replacing with a new color in one step! Yay Lynn — you’ve encouraged me to explore my creative self. Thank you. Thank you. Claudia

53 Jeanelle McCAll August 14, 2011 at 11:25 am

love what you do AND would love to experiment with screen printing!

54 Lisa Quintana August 14, 2011 at 11:27 am

Nice interview. Too bad Thermofax machines are so out of the realm of possibility for most of us. So far, my prints with the screens you’ve made me have been less than desirable. More practice I guess…both in screening and in choosing photos. :(

55 Kelli August 14, 2011 at 11:30 am

I am very interested in screen printing, but it seems so intimidating!

56 Pattie Wall August 14, 2011 at 11:36 am

A Giveaway? I’m in! So many ideas, so little time…I will make time!

57 Coco August 14, 2011 at 11:40 am

60 sharon August 14, 2011 at 11:44 am

I love Lyn’s philosophy about sharing your knowledge … it’s one of the things I get real joy from too. Great profile, great giveaway!

61 Lynn Kunz August 14, 2011 at 11:48 am

I took a class about making and using thermofax screens a few years ago when IQS (?) was in Rosemont, but I’ve never used the materials since! I think it all still intimidates me. Having your DVD and more materials would really push me to try again. Thanks for giving someone the opportunity to get into this.
Lynn

62 Kristin McNamara Freeman August 14, 2011 at 11:49 am

Just retired and have studio space for creating; now each day allows for exploring techniques that only were collected as ideas while working full time. I would love the opportunity to do more screen printing on fabric and use the photos and sketches I have collected in files to begin creating my own designs. Thanks for the opportunity to be considered in the draw.

63 LynDee August 14, 2011 at 11:53 am

Screen printing is a fun and easy way to add pattern and color to fabric and to your art or craft projects. Kids love it and will scream with excitement when the screen is pulled away and the design is unveiled.

64 Susan August 14, 2011 at 12:06 pm

I would love to be chosen. Lynn’s paints feel wonderful on fabric!

65 Gisela August 14, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Hi Lynn,
I totally relate to your feelings about art. Last year when I lost my job, my distress turned to joy as I’ve been able to devote more time to art and to building a business. I’m moving in too many directions right now, but think that the universe will point the way as the time comes. Thanks for sharing so much of your self (and your stuff)!
