Very excited to be hosting a stop on the blog hopping book tour for Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters (published by Lark Crafts 2012). The gang behind the book at the online quilting magazine Fat Quarterly are: Katy Jones, Brioni Greenberg, Tacha Bruecher and John Adams — they all met online through quilting swaps and virtual quilting bees.

For my stop on the tour I am lucky enough to be offering one of the quilt blocks from the book – this one is called Tyre Tracks and is part of the chapter on Polygons. This is what is so great and unique about this book – each chapter is devoted to a different shape of block or piece within a block – triangles, squares, stars, circles and diamonds.

CUTTING

note: In addition to fabrics, you will also need template plastic.

  1. From different coordinating solid fabrics, cut 33 squares measuring 3 inches (7.6cm)
  2. From gray solid fabric, cut: 2 strips measuring 1 x 10 inches (2.5 x 26.7 cm) 2 strips measuring 1 x 10 inches (1.5 x 26.7 cm) 2 strips measuring 1 x 12 inches (1.5 x 31.8 cm)

ASSEMBLY

1. Trace the template onto template plastic and cut it out.

2. Trace around the template on the wrong side of each of the 33 squares.

3. Cut out the shapes and arrange them in three strips of 11, with the pointed ended facing the center of each strip.

4. Stitch the pieces together, starting and ending each Y-seam -inch (.6 cm) from the edge. Draw a line down the center of the overhanging templates on the ends and trim each strip to 10 inches (26.7 cm) in length.

5. Arrange the strips in three columns with the 1 x 10- inch (2.5 x 26.7 cm) gray strips in between. Stitch the strips together, and press.

6. Stitch the shorter gray strips to the top and the bot- tom of the block. Stitch the remaining gray strips to the sides of the block.

Thank you for thr tutorial. I really like the looks of this block and can envision an entire quilt with it.

What a cool design. I’ve never made a polygon but how inspiring. Thanks for a great tutorial. It’s something I’d love to try.

Love the design. Not so crazy about all those Y seams though.
