When the best of times ends in the worst of times

in Whip-Up

This is one of the hardest posts to write. Where to start doesn’t come easily.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the sudden death of Whip Up founder, Kathreen Ricketson. Her partner Rob Shugg is still missing at Coral Bay, Western Australia. Their two gorgeous, beloved children, to whom we send our love, are with relatives.

Kathreen and Rob have been involved in a tragic accident while travelling around Australia with their two cherished children. This was their adventure of a lifetime and it has come to an end in the worst imaginable way.

Kathreen is a highly-regarded and well loved pioneer and leader of this worldwide crafting community.

In this online community of ours, we can form bonds with each other through the sharing of our lives, crafty and otherwise. These bonds are real, despite the fact that most of us never meet in real life…

…and when we lose a member of this community, we need to find some solace in each other and what do here.

There is nothing we can do to undo what has been done, nothing we can say that can ever make this better.

We know that some of you, like us, feel the need to do something, anything, so we are working to towards setting up an education fund for the children’s future. We will let you know as soon as we can make this happen.

In the meantime, hug your children extra tight tonight, kiss your partner good bye, call your family and friends and say I love you.

Jules xx

EDIT: The account for the children has been established, you can find the information here. Please consider making a contribution.

I am so sad to hear this news. Kathreen gave me my first “break” in the crafting world and was such a kind and empowering woman.

My heart goes out to her family, friends and especially her children.

My heart has been aching this morning with this tragic news. I am sending so much love and light to Rob and Kathreen’s children. Jules, I couldn’t find a direct email address for you, but please be in touch if there’s anything I can do in helping to organize or spread the word about what comes next in terms of a fund or other way in which we honor the memory of Kath and Rob. Indeed, they touched so many lives, so beautifully. In the meantime…warm, gentle wishes to all on this sad day.

Kathreen was a giant to me as she was to so many. She was a leader in the craft world but she was also a role model to me as a mom. Her love and devotion to her children were never more apparent than in her Action Pack magazine. I remember in 2004 or so coordinating a group of 20 or so of us from around the world to make a group quilt for Kathreen in gratitude for her leadership on Whipup and the kindness that she had extended to all of us. Amazingly the last thing I did before I went to bed last night was to pull up an email from her with some interview questions that were due next week. It was to be my top priority today because I didn’t want to let her down. I hope those that live near Orlando and Otilija and the family that will be caring for them will let us know how her online friends can support them. I’ll miss you Kathreen and your wonderful work.

I can’t even believe this–what a horrific tragedy. This blog is one of the best resources out there for those in a creative field, and to think that all the energy, resourcefulness, and creativity that began it is gone–it’s incomprehensible to think about. All my thoughts are with her family and friends in this awful time.

16 Larissa Holland May 16, 2013 at 10:16 am

I’ve just received this terrible news, and I’m in shock. What a loss for all of us. It was my pleasure to work with Kathreen on a couple of projects and I enjoyed her creative thinking, kind spirit and humor. My heart hurts for all of their family, but especially for O and O. I’m so glad the kids have a loving family to support them through this. Do let us all know about any opportunities to support them. I’ll be praying for them all.

17 ysolda May 16, 2013 at 10:17 am

Such awful news, Kathreen did so much for the crafting world over the years, her loss will be deeply felt. Thinking of their children and family. Please do let me know if anything is planned to honour their memory.

18 Rachel May 16, 2013 at 10:19 am

I am truly saddened by the news. I have been following this blog for over two years now and was almost envious of their road trip. It was such a brave move on their part. A part of me almost wishes that my eyes are not reading this news right and nothing really happened. My God give the children courage to carry on.

19 cauchy09 May 16, 2013 at 10:19 am

Kathreen was an early supporter of my work and a patient co-conspirator. I missed her already due to their adventure, but now miss her even more.

My thoughts are with her children today.

20 stephinie May 16, 2013 at 10:21 am

28 Betsy Greer May 16, 2013 at 10:48 am

Thanks for posting this, however tragic it may be. I first “met” Kathreen at the beginning of WhipUp many years ago, and her work, kindness, and spirit has been nothing but an inspiration to me. She will be deeply missed by many. x

31 Jessica Jørgensen May 16, 2013 at 10:51 am

No, no, no, no…I am truly at a loss here. Been a silent follower of Kathreen for years now, enjoying her wit, her creativity and these glimpses into her life. Tears are flowing and I can only send love, thoughts and prayers from across the globe. It’s of little solace, but in time, the archives of this blog will be a wonderful resource for her children, a way to reconnect and rediscover their lovely mother. She leaves a beautiful legacy.

32 Ursula-the crafting gypsy May 16, 2013 at 10:51 am

So sad to hear this! I loved this site and even though I did not know Kathreen personally – I will miss her and her crafts and enthusiasm.
It seems so unreal – my heart goes out to the kids! I can not even imagine the pain they must go through right now.

Sending prayers and good thoughts,

This is almost impossible for me to believe right now. Whip Up was one of the first blogs I started reading many years ago when I got back into crafting and started quilting – Kathreen was an inspiration! My love and thoughts to their children.

36 Kara Fleck May 16, 2013 at 10:56 am

51 Susan May 16, 2013 at 11:35 am

Her sweet plaits. Her gratitude. Her need to take to her lounge with tea and good things when life became (as it does for us all) too exhausting at times. Her children. Her vision for her family. Her books for sale in Dublin, New York and Singapore. Oh Kathreen! How could this be?

52 Liz + Kristen May 16, 2013 at 11:36 am

I just cannot believe it. Kathreen was such an amazing woman. I lived vicariously through her tour of Australia wishing I was as brave as she to offer her children a totally different perspective on life, learning and adventure for her children. She has truly touched my life as well as those of so many through her blog and books. A true inspiration. It was my honor to know her. My thoughts are with their family.

I don’t know what to say. I guess you said it already in your post.
Please give my love/hugs/sympathy to her children and other surviving family.

My strength, sorrow and heart go to the kids and those around them. I truly have no words for such a tragic loss. Devastating news. Oh, my heart is aching for their whole family and the crafting community. So sad. Keeping their children in my thoughts and prayers. So sad.

98 Jenny Vorwaller May 16, 2013 at 1:58 pm

I cannot believe this. We were just interacting and liking each other’s photos on instagram a few days ago… and I was feeling so much excitement to see her family’s fun photos… Like Andrea and others mentioned above, she was a great part of the community of artists and photographers and crafters, and it is because of her that all these women came from behind their lens and put down our paintbrushes and self conscious feelings to show each other what we “really looked like” in her flickr group “self portrait tuesday” so many years ago. (That group brought one of my photos to the new york times style page.) She brought so many women as real life friends into my life. What a huge loss we all feel. My heart goes out to the family and especially their beautiful children.

99 Margaret Cureton May 16, 2013 at 1:59 pm

So, so very stunned and sad to hear of this- she was an amazing inspiration from afar- Sending heartfelt prayers for the children and hoping against hope that her partner is ok. I would like to be a part of any fund that is established for her children and will certainly will check back often to see what happens. Again, my very deepest condolences to her family.

100 Danielle | Crafting Connections May 16, 2013 at 2:09 pm

I have come, often, to find inspiration in this space. I’ve read along, silently, for years. And while today, with this news, seems a particularly odd time to speak up – as I don’t really have any words – I must chime in. My thoughts are with those two little ones. My heart aches for them.

101 Darcy May 16, 2013 at 2:19 pm

I have loved WhipUp for so long and admired Kathreen as a mom and a maker. Was so enjoying seeing their journey on Instagram and am now standing at my computer, full of disbelief and sorrow. Thanks for posting and please let us know how we can help her wonderful children.

102 Amy Anderson May 16, 2013 at 2:21 pm

103 Shannon May 16, 2013 at 2:21 pm

I’m in shock. My brain still won’t comprehend that Kathreen is gone. She was such a loving, creative, intelligent, funny and wonderful woman. She was a role model in our community in regards to her wisdom, her work and how she parented. My thoughts are with her beautiful children and her family as well as her husbands family. My heart goes out to them. She will be soooo missed xoxo

If there is anything we can do or organize as an online community please let us know Jules. I know we would all be so appreciative to hear if there is a way we can help. Any way at all.

This is a huge loss for our little crafting community, which is like a family in so many ways. Their children are in my thoughts.

105 Maggie {Smashed Peas and Carrots} May 16, 2013 at 2:30 pm

My heart is aching so badly right now! There are just no words to say. I am shocked and saddened to hear this, Kathreen is an amazing woman that will be missed badly.

106 Michele May 16, 2013 at 2:34 pm

I don’t even know what to say. :( So awful.

107 Shannon Okey May 16, 2013 at 2:42 pm

I am in shock at this terrible news, having just spoken with Kathreen last week about a project. My heart goes out to her children and all her friends, of whom there are many. She will be very missed.

108 Maggie May 16, 2013 at 2:45 pm

Such beautiful children, what a loss for them and all of us. I’m so saddened by this news.

109 Suzanne May 16, 2013 at 2:46 pm

I am so deeply shocked. I will pray for their children and for all those who are affected by her passing. She touched many lives.

110 Tora May 16, 2013 at 2:48 pm

Praying for the children….

111 Kristin Link May 16, 2013 at 2:52 pm

Shocked and terribly saddened. I have such deep respect for Kathreen’s role in the community–there will be a giant hole without her. I have so enjoyed following her journey with her family on Instagram. It is unfathomable that it has ended this way. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help organize a promote a memorial or drive for her children.

112 iHanna May 16, 2013 at 2:57 pm

I have followed Whip-up for for ever, emailed some with Kathreen, read her tweets and sent in guest posts to the site a few years ago… This sad news made me cry, all the way over here in Sweden. And although I do not know her my heart goes out to her, her friends, her family and the children. Words is not enough when a life ends too early, but thanks for letting us know Jules.

113 Delia May 16, 2013 at 3:00 pm

My mind is reeling with this tragic news. My thoughts and prayers go out to those children and finding her partner.

114 LiEr May 16, 2013 at 3:02 pm

I am so sad to hear the news. I am still in shock. Kathreen is an amazing woman, an authentic and generous soul and an extraordinarily skilled crafter. I will pray for her precious family.

115 Laura May 16, 2013 at 3:04 pm

One of the posts said…the bonds between the online art community are real, even though we may never meet…this is so true….another said that Kathreen had given them their first break…God will minister Peace in heavy hearts and the bonds between her beloved art community will live on…as we look to help each other like Kathreen did with encouragement…
Joy, her Joy…will return….

116 amy May 16, 2013 at 3:09 pm

Love to their children. So sorry to hear of this this morning.

117 Abigail @ abigail*ryan May 16, 2013 at 3:14 pm

I wrote for whipup right back when it first started, and always loved emailing with Kathreen, who was absolutely lovely – I am so saddened to hear this news today. I can’t even begin to imagine the devastation her beautiful children and family feel, but know a community around the world is grieving with you and sending best wishes….
Love from Belfast. Xo

118 Colleen May 16, 2013 at 3:23 pm

I have chills and sobs tearing through my body as I write this. Whip-up has been my home page — and my “home” — since its very beginning. I still remember those clunky little votes we did for the graphics. I remember one day staring at the photos of Kathreen’s beautiful and bright and homey home as she and her loves were preparing to take off. What an amazing world, she created, I thought. How ever to leave it? And, every time she posted from the road, I read with relish of her knitting on scraps or foraging for shells. I just can’t believe this is happening. Those two two-headed girls, how I send you love and light. How I pray for a miracle that Rob may be found. I will wait for news. Love, always.

119 A.J. Dub (Amy) May 16, 2013 at 3:34 pm

So sorry to hear! The family will be in our prayers.

120 Kelli May 16, 2013 at 3:49 pm

Heart broken. Sending their children love and prayer from the US.

121 Staci May 16, 2013 at 3:51 pm

I’m so sorry to hear this. My thoughts and prayers go out to her children and other family members. The crafting community has lost a gem.

122 Nancy Langdon May 16, 2013 at 3:57 pm

Peace, strength, joy in the remembrance, faith and love to all who knew Kathreen and her partner, but to her children especially.

Like a star, her vibrant, glowing light goes on shining long after her short days with us. Kathreen was a supporter of me and my work and I am very grateful to her and deeply saddened.

“You can’t do anything about the length of your life, but you can do something about its width and depth.” (- Early 20th Century jounalist H.L. Menchen) And this Kathreen did!

123 anna May 16, 2013 at 4:15 pm

I’m so sorry to hear this news! Love goes out to their children.

124 cecile May 16, 2013 at 4:22 pm

I am so sad to read to read that. Kathreen has been such a huge part of this crafty community, her blog is so alive… I cannot imagine that she is gone. My heart goes to her children, parents and relatives.

125 Jane May 16, 2013 at 4:23 pm

I’m very sorry to hear this terrible news. Kathreen was a real inspiration – I took up patchwork and knitting after stumbling across Whip Up many years ago. Crafting got me through some very hard times and through a difficult move from my home country. It really mattered to me that there was an online place where I could feel at home even though I was away from all my family and friends. The little peeks into Kathreen’s house – her kitchen and her work-spaces – and the anecdotes about daily routines made me smile. What I feel now is so like homesickness I can’t even describe it. Kathreen’s energy and generosity in sharing her time and her skills has made a huge difference to many lives – and will have a lasting impact for a long time (certainly, I will never give up crafting and the skills I learned from reading Whip Up will stay with me forever). It seems so unfair that the trip that was the focus of such hope and love could end in such a terrible way. I pray that Rob will be found safe and well. My thoughts are with their friends and especially with their family. I will gladly lend my support to an education fund or anything else that needs to be done.

126 aurora fox May 16, 2013 at 4:25 pm

I am shcoked and saddened by this news. Kathreen generously included me in her book and I have enjoyed and learned much form her blog. My heart goes out to their children and I am holding them in the light.

127 Lisa Jordan May 16, 2013 at 4:38 pm

My deepest condolences to the family. What a sad, sad day for the craft community.

128 Leslie Astor May 16, 2013 at 4:38 pm

I am so shocked and saddened to have just come across the terrible news of Kathreen’s and Rob’s deaths. Just last month I sung Kathreen’s praises on my blog, after which we exchanged brief but sincere emails. She was hugely inspirational to me and so many others. My heart breaks for her children-there are no words. Sending such love to their families and friends.

129 Kelly May 16, 2013 at 4:47 pm

heartbroken and shocked. She let us into her life with such openness and inspired me on many occasions. My thoughts and prayers for her children and family.

130 diane stanley May 16, 2013 at 4:56 pm

Something good has left this world.

My love and prayers for your kids, Kathreen and Rob.

135 Catherine May 16, 2013 at 5:03 pm

I have never met Kathreen, but followed her blog, have all her books and have enjoyed following her family’s travels on instagram and online.

Kathreen was such an amazing inspiration, and clearly had so much love for her family. I really can’t compute that this wonderful woman and her wonderful partner have gone. I have children just about the same age as her two gorgeous children, and my heart just breaks for them.

Jules and Danielle – please, please let me know what I can do, however big or small. My thoughts and prayers will be with Kathreen and Rob’s family, and with those two beautiful children. Thank you for sharing this post. Catherine

136 Jen May 16, 2013 at 5:10 pm

Terribly tragic news. My thoughts are with Kathleen’s children during this terrible time.

137 Cyndy May 16, 2013 at 5:14 pm

Shocked and truly at a loss for words. Kathreen was one of those people that you couldn’t help but admire because of the way she lived her life. When I first got involved with blogging and the online craft community hers was one of the first blogs I stumbled upon. My heart goes out to her children and family.

138 Amy May 16, 2013 at 5:26 pm

Shocked and utterly speechless as this horrible, horrible news. I just got the chance to work with Kathreen in the past few months for a couple of pieces she wrote for Australian Quilters Companion Magazine. She went out of her way to include me, and was just so sweet to email back and forth with. It’s no wonder why she was so successful- such a talented, and positive spirit. I can hardly believe this has happened. My deepest prayers and condolences go out to her loved ones.

139 strikkelise May 16, 2013 at 5:31 pm

This is such terrible news. I hope her partner will be allright and that the children will be well taken care of.

140 corrie May 16, 2013 at 5:35 pm

Such sad, sad news – thank you so much for putting this post together ( it must have been so hard for you) to give us a place to share our grief and also to pass our love and thoughts on to her family and especially her children. I will be checking in to find out how I can help once the fund is set up xx

147 Suzy May 16, 2013 at 5:52 pm

We are so saddened by this tragedy. Our prayers and love go to the children at this most horrible, sad time. Gut wrenching.

148 Sooz May 16, 2013 at 5:57 pm

I hope it provides some comfort to you Orlando and Otilija in the coming years as you try to come to terms with your loss that your parents provided so much joy and inspiration to so many. I know your mum loved you both fiercely, and her mission to be a great mother to you both was her guiding passion. It was the basis for so much of her work and so much of the way she connected with other people. She wanted to help create a world you could grow up in and inherit that would make you happy and proud of her. Her loss is no less tragic for all the wonderful things she has done, but I hope you will always know you are not alone in knowing her and what an amazing person she was.

149 Claire - Matching Pegs May 16, 2013 at 6:16 pm

So well said Sooz.

150 Kirsten May 16, 2013 at 6:46 pm

Amen, Suzie. Beautiful words. May O & O tuck these words and the many others shared here in their hearts. x

151 2paw May 16, 2013 at 6:04 pm

I was watching the News last night and feeling so sad for the children, not realising that I knew Kathreen internetally. Life is fleeting. You just never know. I am so glad the children have family who can take care of them.

152 Christine May 16, 2013 at 6:17 pm

Such devastating news. My thoughts are with their children; I can’t even begin to imagine what they are going through. I didn’t know Kathreen well but she wrote about my 52 crafts challenge and I contributed a guest post a while back. If there’s anything I can do to help when the time comes please get in touch.

153 Jo ebisujima May 16, 2013 at 6:20 pm

Kathreen was an absolute pioneer in craft blogging in Australia. An inspiration and a complete champion of handmade and makers from around the globe. Just a lovely, sweet lady, really. I’m so sad to hear of her passing. Thinking of her family and friends at this terrible time.

155 Claire - Matching Pegs May 16, 2013 at 6:21 pm

Dear O and O,
One day, when you are ready, you might read these comments, and read about just how special your parents were to strangers all over the world. I’m guessing it won’t do much to ease the pain of your loss, but I just wanted to say that it was very clear, to those of us that always read Whip Up, that you were the centre of their world, and that you inspired a lot of the creativity that we so admired.

My thoughts are prayers are with you both, and the rest of your family.

156 Lindsay May 16, 2013 at 6:22 pm

So incredibly sad. Please keep us updated on the children’s fund. To her lovely children, may you have the brightest of futures ahead of you. Sorry for your loss.

157 Anshu May 16, 2013 at 6:35 pm

166 Rena May 16, 2013 at 7:25 pm

My heart breaks for Kathreen’s children. I have been so sad today thinking about those left behind. She was such an inspiration to me and my 12 year old daughter. When I went into my sewing room today, the Kids Crafternoon Sewing book was open on the table…left open by my daughter looking for something to make. There will forever be a giant hole in the crafting world.

167 Tamara May 16, 2013 at 7:35 pm

So devastating! So sad! I am so very glad her two children are being comforted by family. I pray for the family as they work through their grief.

Words cannot convey. I have known Rob for 20 years, and Kathreen somewhat less.

181 Tania Evans May 16, 2013 at 9:16 pm

Thanks for your moving post Julie – I’m sure that was very difficult to write – and also to read all the beautiful tributes to Kathreen and her family. Kathreen’s inspiration, creative talents and friendship were shared with so many and she will be so deeply missed. I had the wonderful privilege to work with Kathreen on an art magazine and continue on in her previous job. Her memory is everywhere, particularly today as I work numbly with a heavy heart towards our print deadline. Kathreen and Rob became were very dear friends and I send all my love to their children. So hard to believe. So very loved.

182 flk May 16, 2013 at 9:26 pm

RIP Kathreen and Rob. To remember them, in Kathreen’s words:
‘I love to share our discoveries and our philosophy too, to help others to make things, to not be afraid of living with less and taking creative chances – to make small changes here and there that add up to a more fulfilling and creative life.’
They lived by this credo, they changed lives and they touched people around the world. Their beloved children will come to know this.

183 lisa May 16, 2013 at 9:30 pm

Oh my goodness I just can’t believe this. Kathreen was such a lovely person. My heart is breaking for the children. What a tragic loss.

Heartbroken to hear this.

194 Laura Wilson May 16, 2013 at 11:08 pm

As I read these comments, I see my experience with Kathreen was shared by so many. She was so very kind and encouraging, and is responsible for building the connections many of us have here. Like others have said, she also helped me get started when I began designing patterns, and I was so flattered to been included in some of her projects. I do, indeed, feel like I’ve lost a friend on the other side of the world. There is something truly special about someone who can build connections so genuinely. May her memory be eternal!

195 Jan May 16, 2013 at 11:12 pm

So incredibly sorry to hear this news. Kathreen was so gracious with her space and ideas – this is an incredible loss across a broad spectrum. Her dear, sweet children……it was always so apparent how much she loved them!!! Please let us know what we can do to help with a fund for them.

Gosh, I had been hearing that a Canberran had died on a WA beach but I only just heard on the radio that it was Kathreen Ricketson. My heart immediately skipped a beat and then started to ache. I have been a big fan of Kathreen’s work for years. As a fellow Canberran it was always nice to see someone creative doing such awesome work. My heart breaks for O & O.

I heard this news from retro mummy blog. I am new to blogging but I would like to give my condolences to the family. I did not know Katherine or have never met her but as a mum I understand how hard this would be to lose someone you love. My thoughts are with the children and family.

208 Kirsty May 17, 2013 at 1:57 am

Such terrible news. We loved the Action Packs and I’d been following Whipup on Instagram, reliving a similar trip we took a decade ago. Ningaloo was one of our favourite places. What a generous family sharing their beautiful lives, my deepest sympathies.

209 Ali May 17, 2013 at 2:01 am

What shocking and tragic news. Kathreen was one of life’s movers and shakers. I so admired her energy and her ability to create – both in terms of craft and community. How unbearably sad for her children and her family to loose her so young.

An unfathomable tragedy. My thoughts are with immediate and extended family.

I had the great pleasure of being close to Rob for about 3 years in the early 1990′s and will never forget his warmth, kindness, sense of adventure and fascinating quirkiness. I have no doubt he would have been a model father and husband.

211 Sandra May 17, 2013 at 2:46 am

What sad, sad news! My heart goes out to the family, especially to her 2 boys…. Such a tragedy

212 nancy d May 17, 2013 at 2:46 am

I am so sick to be reading about this! Such a young woman and so tragic for her children. I have read whip up for several years and enjoyed it so much. So, so sad. My heart breaks for her children.

213 Laura May 17, 2013 at 3:20 am

Like everyone else, I am in shock. My heart goes out to her children and their families. This is a great loss to the crafting community and an unbearable tragedy for those closest to her. Thanks for keeping us updated – will check back for news of an education fund.

214 Mary May 17, 2013 at 3:30 am

216 Michelle Cornish May 17, 2013 at 3:36 am

This is such tragic news. I met Kathreen a few times for coffee and our boys would play together years ago. She was such an amazing woman and so inspirational, both as an artist and as a mother. My thoughts are with two exceptional children right now.

217 Panya May 17, 2013 at 3:41 am

I’m very sorry to hear this. My thoughts will be with the family.

218 Kerry May 17, 2013 at 3:52 am

We met this lovely family at Hamelin Pool in Shark Bay, our holiday destination Exmouth, their next destination Ningalloo Station. Our children played with their children the night we camped at the same place.
I cannot imagine what their poor children are going through. Such a devastating event.
A lovely family on an adventure of a life time, which turned terribly wrong.

May they rest in peace, and loving thoughts sent to their 2 children…blessed be xx

Kerry, Chris and kids

224 ainslie beattie May 17, 2013 at 5:07 am

Kathreen was a bright and inspiring spark in my craft journey and a very happy additional teacher to my kids with her fantastic Action Packs. I am so deeply saddened for the loss of her and her husband and my heart felt sympathies go out to their children and families. To be living the dream in such an inspiring way and to be taken in such unbearable circumstances is truly sad. I will indeed hug my children tighter tonight and tell my husband how much I love him as I shed more tears. Those who are not part of the blog world may not understand our online connections – but they are real – Kathreen felt like a friend and there is deep sorrow at her loss.

In loving memory
Ainslie x

I was so very saddened to hear about this dreadful accident. I didn’t know Kathleen personally but I knew Whip Up and was impressed by the great work she did there. She will be much missed in the crafting community and my thoughts go out to her children and family.

230 Nicole May 17, 2013 at 8:20 am

It was devastating to hear Kathreen’s name on the radio. As a Canberran I loved that the one craft blog I followed regularly was a fellow Canberran. Everyone’s words have captured my feeling of loss. I never met Kathreen but I felt like I knew her. Her love for her family moved me, her achievements made me proud, her fearlessness to take a year off to travel with her family astounded me. I will miss you Kathreen. My thoughts are with all who loved you. Xxx

231 Masha May 17, 2013 at 8:20 am

I’m so very sad to hear the news! I wish all the strength in the world to come to their two children, other family members and friends to live through these horrible times!

232 Ruth May 17, 2013 at 8:30 am

233 Emily Neuburger May 17, 2013 at 8:42 am

I am deeply saddened by this tragic news. Kathreen’s talent was abundantly clear and I’ve enjoyed reading her blog years. I’ll especially always feel thankful for her kind support for one of my big projects last year. My heart and mind will steadily be with their families and children in the days, weeks, and months to come. Sending warmth and love to the whole crafting community as we grieve.

234 Bernadine May 17, 2013 at 8:57 am

Kathreen’s work was inspirational. This is a devastating loss for all of us, and especially her children. I would be happy to donate to an education fund for her children.

236 Mimi K May 17, 2013 at 9:13 am

People question that true connections/friendships can be made through the internet but the loss and sadness I am feeling is proof that the connections are real. Kathreen made a place to bring us all together and meet new people. I admired her tremendously.

Whip Up! was the very first blog I ever read and the first one I contributed to. Kathreen inspired beloved crafternoon’s with my bff. Her work and the broader community have encouraged all of my crafty endevours. Sincere condolences to her family.

243 Alyssa Lichner (@PileOFabric) May 17, 2013 at 10:55 am

Wow, this is really a shock. In the blogging world it is so easy for us to be completely oblivious of the real world and to go about our regular crafting posts. To hear of something so real, so sad, and so painful is a wake up call. I am praying for those sweet little children! I am so sorry Whipup team :(

244 Rachel Wolf May 17, 2013 at 11:11 am

:( so so sad… sorry the families loss and to those children… i never had a chance to know of or hear of this wonderful and amazing sounding woman… tragedy always has to strike in the worst times, and do the unbelievable and unexpected… i wish i had a chance to meet her, i love crafts and i feel the aches and pain for a loss… :( prayers and thoughts are with the family, and blessing too all aching to such a sad and hard sudden loss

254 Cass May 17, 2013 at 6:30 pm

I am in shock, standing here in my pyjamas in the kitchen, reading of this sudden sharp loss. This shouldn’t happen – not to people who shake and shape their world with such life affirming passion and love. Of course it shouldn’t happen to anyone, but in times like this life feels so bitter and hard. My love and heart goes out to her children. I cannot imagine their families and their sense of loss.

255 nicole blum May 17, 2013 at 6:31 pm

I am so sad. Kathreen had such an amazing spirit and was giving her children so much – giving the world so much. It is hard to fathom a loss like this and to worry about the heartbreak and grief of Otilija and Orlando. My heart is broken for them as they move through this terrible time.

256 Kathryn May 17, 2013 at 7:00 pm

We’d like to send our best wishes to Kathreen’s family and team Whip Up from FaveQuilts and our readers.

259 Jeanette May 17, 2013 at 10:22 pm

My condolences, she will be truly missed!

280 Patricia May 21, 2013 at 12:14 pm

To the families and children of Kathleen and Rob: May the comfort from family and friends strengthen you during this difficult time, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

I just wanted to express something here. Let her family know that I am just one more person who was touched by your wonderful Kathreen. I am so incredibly sorry, incredibly sorry for your loss. 293 Marcie Cuff September 30, 2013 at 3:13 pm

I have not been tuned in for months and have just now read this heartbreaking news. Kathreen was one who had faith in me years ago–when I was just starting out online–and treated me as if I had meaningful input in any projects we worked on. She will be so deeply missed. I think some people are born magicians–Kathreen was one of them.
