When the best of times ends in the worst of times

KathreenRob

This is one of the hardest posts to write. Where to start doesn’t come easily.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the sudden death of Whip Up founder, Kathreen Ricketson. Her partner Rob Shugg is still missing at Coral Bay, Western Australia. Their two gorgeous, beloved children, to whom we send our love, are with relatives.

Kathreen and Rob have been involved in a tragic accident while travelling around Australia with their two cherished children. This was their adventure of a lifetime and it has come to an end in the worst imaginable way.

Kathreen is a highly-regarded and well loved pioneer and leader of this worldwide crafting community.

In this online community of ours, we can form bonds with each other through the sharing of our lives, crafty and otherwise. These bonds are real, despite the fact that most of us never meet in real life…

…and when we lose a member of this community, we need to find some solace in each other and what do here.

There is nothing we can do to undo what has been done, nothing we can say that can ever make this better.

We know that some of you, like us, feel the need to do something, anything, so we are working to towards setting up an education fund for the children’s future. We will let you know as soon as we can make this happen.

In the meantime, hug your children extra tight tonight, kiss your partner good bye, call your family and friends and say I love you.

Jules xx

EDIT: The account for the children has been established, you can find the information here. Please consider making a contribution.

I am so sad to hear this news. Kathreen gave me my first “break” in the crafting world and was such a kind and empowering woman.

My heart goes out to her family, friends and especially her children.

My heart has been aching this morning with this tragic news. I am sending so much love and light to Rob and Kathreen’s children. Jules, I couldn’t find a direct email address for you, but please be in touch if there’s anything I can do in helping to organize or spread the word about what comes next in terms of a fund or other way in which we honor the memory of Kath and Rob. Indeed, they touched so many lives, so beautifully. In the meantime…warm, gentle wishes to all on this sad day.

Kathreen was a giant to me as she was to so many. She was a leader in the craft world but she was also a role model to me as a mom. Her love and devotion to her children were never more apparent than in her Action Pack magazine. I remember in 2004 or so coordinating a group of 20 or so of us from around the world to make a group quilt for Kathreen in gratitude for her leadership on Whipup and the kindness that she had extended to all of us. Amazingly the last thing I did before I went to bed last night was to pull up an email from her with some interview questions that were due next week. It was to be my top priority today because I didn’t want to let her down. I hope those that live near Orlando and Otilija and the family that will be caring for them will let us know how her online friends can support them. I’ll miss you Kathreen and your wonderful work.

I can’t even believe this–what a horrific tragedy. This blog is one of the best resources out there for those in a creative field, and to think that all the energy, resourcefulness, and creativity that began it is gone–it’s incomprehensible to think about. All my thoughts are with her family and friends in this awful time.

I’ve just received this terrible news, and I’m in shock. What a loss for all of us. It was my pleasure to work with Kathreen on a couple of projects and I enjoyed her creative thinking, kind spirit and humor. My heart hurts for all of their family, but especially for O and O. I’m so glad the kids have a loving family to support them through this. Do let us all know about any opportunities to support them. I’ll be praying for them all.

A part of me almost wishes that my eyes are not reading this news right and nothing really happened. My God give the children courage to carry on.

Tears are flowing and I can only send love, thoughts and prayers from across the globe. I cannot believe this. We were just interacting and liking each other’s photos on instagram a few days ago… and I was feeling so much excitement to see her family’s fun photos… Like Andrea and others mentioned above, she was a great part of the community of artists and photographers and crafters, and it is because of her that all these women came from behind their lens and put down our paintbrushes and self conscious feelings to show each other what we “really looked like” in her flickr group “self portrait tuesday” so many years ago. (That group brought one of my photos to the new york times style page.) She brought so many women as real life friends into my life. What a huge loss we all feel. My heart goes out to the family and especially their beautiful children.

I’m in shock. My brain still won’t comprehend that Kathreen is gone. She was such a loving, creative, intelligent, funny and wonderful woman. She was a role model in our community in regards to her wisdom, her work and how she parented. My thoughts are with her beautiful children and her family as well as her husbands family. My heart goes out to them. She will be soooo missed xoxo

If there is anything we can do or organize as an online community please let us know Jules. I know we would all be so appreciative to hear if there is a way we can help. Any way at all.

I have chills and sobs tearing through my body as I write this. Whip-up has been my home page — and my “home” — since its very beginning. I still remember those clunky little votes we did for the graphics. I remember one day staring at the photos of Kathreen’s beautiful and bright and homey home as she and her loves were preparing to take off. What an amazing world, she created, I thought. How ever to leave it? And, every time she posted from the road, I read with relish of her knitting on scraps or foraging for shells. I just can’t believe this is happening. Those two two-headed girls, how I send you love and light. How I pray for a miracle that Rob may be found. I will wait for news. Love, always.

Peace, strength, joy in the remembrance, faith and love to all who knew Kathreen and her partner, but to her children especially.

Like a star, her vibrant, glowing light goes on shining long after her short days with us. Kathreen was a supporter of me and my work and I am very grateful to her and deeply saddened.

I’m very sorry to hear this terrible news. Kathreen was a real inspiration – I took up patchwork and knitting after stumbling across Whip Up many years ago. Crafting got me through some very hard times and through a difficult move from my home country. It really mattered to me that there was an online place where I could feel at home even though I was away from all my family and friends. The little peeks into Kathreen’s house – her kitchen and her work-spaces – and the anecdotes about daily routines made me smile. What I feel now is so like homesickness I can’t even describe it. Kathreen’s energy and generosity in sharing her time and her skills has made a huge difference to many lives – and will have a lasting impact for a long time (certainly, I will never give up crafting and the skills I learned from reading Whip Up will stay with me forever). It seems so unfair that the trip that was the focus of such hope and love could end in such a terrible way. I pray that Rob will be found safe and well. My thoughts are with their friends and especially with their family. I will gladly lend my support to an education fund or anything else that needs to be done.

I know your mum loved you both fiercely, and her mission to be a great mother to you both was her guiding passion. It was the basis for so much of her work and so much of the way she connected with other people. She wanted to help create a world you could grow up in and inherit that would make you happy and proud of her. Her loss is no less tragic for all the wonderful things she has done, but I hope you will always know you are not alone in knowing her and what an amazing person she was.

‘I love to share our discoveries and our philosophy too, to help others to make things, to not be afraid of living with less and taking creative chances – to make small changes here and there that add up to a more fulfilling and creative life.’
They lived by this credo, they changed lives and they touched people around the world. Their beloved children will come to know this.

My heart is breaking at this terrible news. I knew Kathreen even before she started Whip Up and we have collaborated multiple times through the years. My thoughts are with her children and her and Rob’s family. I hope they will know how loved and admired she was in our community, a true gem, and she will be sorely missed.

Such terrible news. We loved the Action Packs and I’d been following Whipup on Instagram, reliving a similar trip we took a decade ago. Ningaloo was one of our favourite places. What a generous family sharing their beautiful lives, my deepest sympathies.

What shocking and tragic news. Kathreen was one of life’s movers and shakers. I so admired her energy and her ability to create – both in terms of craft and community. How unbearably sad for her children and her family to loose her so young.

An unfathomable tragedy. My thoughts are with immediate and extended family.

I had the great pleasure of being close to Rob for about 3 years in the early 1990′s and will never forget his warmth, kindness, sense of adventure and fascinating quirkiness. I have no doubt he would have been a model father and husband.

We met this lovely family at Hamelin Pool in Shark Bay, our holiday destination Exmouth, their next destination Ningalloo Station. Our children played with their children the night we camped at the same place.
I cannot imagine what their poor children are going through. Such a devastating event.
A lovely family on an adventure of a life time, which turned terribly wrong.

May they rest in peace, and loving thoughts sent to their 2 children…blessed be xx

Kathreen was a bright and inspiring spark in my craft journey and a very happy additional teacher to my kids with her fantastic Action Packs. I am so deeply saddened for the loss of her and her husband and my heart felt sympathies go out to their children and families. To be living the dream in such an inspiring way and to be taken in such unbearable circumstances is truly sad. I will indeed hug my children tighter tonight and tell my husband how much I love him as I shed more tears. Those who are not part of the blog world may not understand our online connections – but they are real – Kathreen felt like a friend and there is deep sorrow at her loss.

In loving memory

I never met Kathreen but I felt like I knew her. Her love for her family moved me, her achievements made me proud, her fearlessness to take a year off to travel with her family astounded me.
