Summit of Awesome comes to Washington, DC. (MidCity, Washington, D.C.) On Friday, May 1st, Hello Craft will host its first ever Summit of Awesome. Geared specifically for independent artists and crafters, the Summit of Awesome is 3 days of seminars and
hands-on workshops, which will provide business and technical education for those in the handmade arts community. The Summit also includes the D.C. premiere showing of the Indie Craft Documentary film. More information or to register go to the Hello Craft website.

Art from the heart – 2 day artist retreat at Bundanon – Arthur Boyd’s artist retreat. 25-26 April. Places are limited contact details (Au) 02 42296232. Accommodation is at Riversdale an award winning building by architect Glenn Murcutt – it recently won the American Institute of Architects 2009 Gold Medal.

The American Craft Council is now accepting AltCraft applications for our show in San Francisco. Show dates are August 14-16. The average booth is valued at $1,000 but as part of the Council’s commitment to indie crafters, the cost of participation is just $350. The deadline is Monday, April 27. RedBubble announced that 67 of the artists on the website had raised a total of $3,350 for the Red Cross bushfire appeal through sales of their works, many of which were specially created for the Phoenix Appeal. This was matched by RedBubble for a total for $6,700 for victims of the bushfires.

9 major British galleries and museums on a new social media project called Creative Spaces: throwing open the collections of: The V&A, British Museum, Tate, National Portrait Gallery, Natural History Museum, Sir John Soane’s Museum, Royal Armouries, The Wallace Collection and the Imperial War Museum. Visitors to the site can search all the collections at once. Creative Spaces: Check out this nonprofit, public sector project, where for the the first time national museums have collaborated in an online resource.

New program for artistic students that is being hosted by Threadless called “Threadless 101: Find out more here

The idea is this: students (anyone from middle school to college is eligible) are given an assignment in their class to create an original design for a tee-shirt. Their designs are critiqued and voted for by their classmates. Once the assignment is completed and the winning design has been selected for the class, students can upload their design to the Threadless site to be included in the regular design challenge to get their tee actually printed. If their design is selected, they will receive a $3,000 tax-free scholarship and $500 each time their tee-shirt is re-printed. DESIGN OF THE YEAR winners can collect an addition 20k!
