can lid magnets

Each time I opened a can I would throw the lids and cans in the recycle bin. One day as I was opening a can, I noticed that the lid top had a small well. The well was deep enough to hold liquid. After trial and error my “Can Lid Magnets” were created.

The can opener I use is a safety can opener that cuts the can on the side rather than the top. The can edge can safely be handled without fear of being cut.

Wash and dry the lids. Using alcohol inks to color the lids, this is not necessary and the lids can be left natural. Alcohol inks are fast drying and come in a range of colors I encourage you to experiment with these inks.

Cut or rip a background paper to fit inside the lid or a part of the lid. I like to distress the edges with ink. Glue the paper into the lid, any type of glue will work I use a fast drying paper glue.

Glue embellishments, photos printed on cardstock, stickers, buttons, diamonds, decorative paper, etc. on the lid and paper. I recommend arranging the embellishments prior to gluing everything down. Adding a little gold glitter around the edge of a photo or cutout adds glimmer and dimension.

The last step is to cover the entire project with a clear glaze. I use a dimensional adhesive to ensure the embellishments are secure. My experience has taught me to cover the entire lid, but remove all excess glaze otherwise bubbles will form.

Allow the lid to dry on a flat surface for 24 hours. Once completely dry glue a magnet to the back, I use E6000 glue.
