Its been a crazy week – home from work sick with a fluey/coldy thing which I can’t seem to shake, but whilst at home I did manage to catch up on some crafting. Made the family new winter hats – gorgeous Noro Kochoran angora/silk/wool combo beautiful. Also been doing the patterns and more illustrations for my next book to go with the manuscript. But the big craziness came when my hubby had to go to emergency for appendicitis – he is still in hospital and will be for the weekend – so the kids and I are back and forth keeping him company. Pretty tired actually. But did manage to make him a soft sleep mask so he can get some sleep in all the glare that is hospital life. So this newsletter will be short and sweet – highlighting just a few fabulous things that whipup has featured this week.

But before that here are some placed I have been – - – I have been addicted to the crochet colour blast of Sarah London – she has an online shop – and teaches too – and sells patterns – - – I have been also online yarn shopping at Bendigo Wool Mills – yummy soft Australian wool and also lashed out and purchased Manos del Uruguay from a yarn outlet - they were having a sale!

Betsy from craftivism wrote in asking for help seeking ideas on ways to recycle trash in a small Guatemalan village – here is the letter – if you can help either leave a comment here or email her betsy[AT]craftivism[.]com

One of the biggest problems regarding health in Guatemala (and other countries) is related to trash. In the villages, to get rid of trash, they burn it, right in the middle of the village, letting dangerous toxic fumes blow right down the main street, not 10 yards from houses, kids, cows.

I’m working on putting together a grant proposal with some ideas of how the villagers could reuse their trash to create something useful. Yes, they could also make stuff and resell it, but unless it can be resold in country, it’s perpetuating Guatemala being dependent on other countries. The money from the grant would go towards making/teaching/testing creations in order to see if the villagers can easily make them …

Given the DIY/craft community’s enthusiasm for reusing materials, what could we come up with that would make life easier in developing countries? From solar power to LED lights to making yarn from plastic bags to reusing plastic bottle … The possibilities are endless! The biggest problem is finding a way to reuse plastic so it can be saved from the town dump. Yes, recycling would be awesome, but not as practical in the middle of nowhere. Water is also an issue as some people have to carry it from a stream in buckets… which I can tell you, are heavy!

So, I’m asking you, lovely craft peeps, to either pass on any links you might have of creative reuse ideas or to pass on the word that I’m looking for them.

    man made

there is a new craft blog on the scene and this one is dedicated to all the handy and crafty blokes out there.

ManMadeDIY.com is a new crafting website that doesn’t presume its readers are female. It’s a home for men excited about crafts, art, design, home décor, and food. Men for whom “making” means more than soldering, and who proudly store their knitting needles next to their circular saws.

I am sort of loving the recycled paint tin pendant lights and they have a free downloadable poster ‘happiness is a hot glue gun’ + lots of other great stuff including tool tips, grammar help + crafty haiku.
