whipup roundup

I have been loving all the rain – great opportunity to stay in and bake and craft and listen to music. I have been addicted lately to Tessa Kiros’ cook books – you have heard of her books of course – I own several and use them often. I love Apples for Jam – the recipes are organised by colour and are interspersed with colourful family stories, her children’s drawing and real photos of the food and her life. These are wholesome, tasty, family recipes – there is much to love in this book.

But somehow I keep coming back to Falling Cloudberries – with a byline of ‘a world of family recipes’ – Tessa has collected recipes from her travels, her friends, her family and her various heritage influences. With Greek, Italian, Finnish and Portuguese influences – the flavours in this book are addictive. I made one of her soup recipes 2 nights in a row (Red Pepper Soup) the flavours were so amazing. The mixture of lemon and rosemary really works in this dish.

  • First roast and peel about 4 capsicums (red bell peppers – not the spicy sort). Grill the red peppers skin side up until blackened and then put in a plastic bag to sweat for 10 mins – then peel off the skins – to leave you with soft roasted capsicums (these are yummy as is or in a salad). (You could roast some tomatoes too or use tinned in this recipe.)
  • Then slow fry a chopped onion, with 2 crushed garlic cloves, some finely chopped fresh rosemary, finely grated lemon rind and a pinch or two of sea salt in olive oil – until soft and a bit caramel-ly.
  • Then toss in your tomatoes, roasted capsicum, cup of water or stock and cook for about 30 mins, then wizz up until blended.
  • Salt to taste and serve with a dollop of yoghurt or fetta and some chopped olives and more of the lemon zest and chopped rosemary. Oh so yum yum yummy.
  • And a roast chicken dish she has is so easy and so yummy (Lemon and Oregano Chicken):

  • Simply quarter a whole chicken and sort of squash each quarter a bit flat, then fry skin side down (in an oven proof dish) in olive oil (or duck fat as I did), with lots of fresh/dried oregano and sea salt.
  • Then add about 1/4 cup of fresh squeezed lemon juice – turn the chicken pieces over and fry a bit longer – add more herbs and salt, then pop your chicken in its oven proof dish into the oven to bake for another 30-40 mins.
  • This dish is so divine with crispy roast potatoes and fresh salad.
  • As for the craftiness – here is some inspiration for you…

  • fabric flowers
  • cookie medals
  • friendship necklace
  • kitchener stitch for knitters
  • machine sew binding – for quilters
  • Books:

  • Little birds

If you were reading my twitter posts today you would have found out 2 things. The first is that I ran over my finger with my long-arm quilting machine – put the timing out on my machine, bandaged up my gash, and then had to await my husband to fix it – in the meantime I wrote this newsletter, drank sweet tea and ate chocolate to recover from the stupidity of it all. The second thing was the announcement of the release of Whip Up Mini Quilts I won’t say more about it now – am planning a month of mini quilts at whipup in April as well as a blog tour later next month. I will just leave you with a pic of the gorgeous cover.

Don’t forget to pass on to friends this info and voucher to advertise with whipup – link peruse the info sheet (I have a pdf and use this 15% discount voucher when booking an ad between now and 1 AprilMarch2010wKcH65‘.

Some great content on whipup this month too … its not all about me :) We did a fantastic refashion roundup – this t-shirt grocery bag is one of my faves … reviewed some great books and featured lots of easter friendly crafts. I was also reading about family drawing time - an activity I love – and some helpful budgeting tips and crafts

I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, joyful solstice and a wonderful holiday season. This time next week the craziness will be over, presents will be unwrapped, food will be eaten, families will have gathered and perhaps departed again. I wish everyone a joyful time, and whether or not you have been able to partake in a handmade holiday – I hope that the spirit of handmade has been with you.

This year I have baked, I made Martha Stewart’s gingerbread cookies and my mothers recipe for fruit mince tarts. I am planning on making marshmallows – my first batch failed miserably – but then after searching for tips on the internet I turned to … book and realised have now given the task to my husband who is heartily using it as a scientific experiment and a chance to show off in the kitchen. I lashed out this year and bought myself a new kitchen aid – something I have been promising myself for years – so this year is baking year for me – for some holiday baking ideas see this story on a sweet christmas.

This year, while I have made an effort to buy everyone at least one handmade gift – I didn’t have time to make a lot of things this year – as I have other years. Also, due to popular demand, we have bought a corny kitsch tree complete with flashing lights, but have decorated it with last years handmade ornaments.

Whipup this past week is right into the holiday spirit with handmade gift guides for everyone – jewelry, bags and kids – and gifts for him is coming soon. If like me you have only just put up your tree – some last minute decorating ideas – this cute paper ornament, paper garland, holly leaf garland, quilled snowflake, crochet candy garland, woodland birds, stars.

My favourite posts this week would have to be the super simple and sweet stick stars tutorial, simple gifts to make and the natural wreath.

If you are in the mood to knit – check out more free knitting patterns here and here, you might want to download this pattern for a good cause.

Have a wonderful holiday – and don’t fret the small things.
    Kathreen xx

ps. don’t forget your whipup crafty calendar – too late now for Christmas – but not too late for the new year!

Thank so much everyone for reading whipup this past week. Nicole and I love to bring you the best and brightest handmade finds from around the blogsphere, but we couldn’t do it without your help and encouragement. Nicole has been obsessed with going to market and have you seen the fabulous fabric coasters she is making? (they are the criss-cross coasters from allsorts)

This last week we have had a few contributor stories and tutorials – and the fabulous worm story was very well received – thank you Anna. And I have been just a little skirt obsessed this past week – check out these skirts here, here and here.

More skirts with a recycled/refashion skirt tutorial from Amy. New website Large promised big (cough) things. Speaking of big, did you see the über collection of tutorials? I am thinking of making my own list of tutorials we have featured here on whipup – so look out for that in the next week (or so). I will be compiling more essential holiday reading/crafting books too.

I have been pretty busy this week – with researching print on demand places and organising images for the inaugural whipup calendar. I just love the artists and designers featured - check it out for yourself. And don’t forget to read the article I wrote for storque - all about Australian makers and designers (the pic is me on holiday in Tasmania).
